Yesterday I purchased an Acer Aspire 5740 laptop, which I quite like except for the awful beep it makes when the power cord is plugged in or removed from the laptop. Is there any way to disable this beeping sound?
-
Lol... now how often do you keep connecting and disconnecting with it powered
It's a good reminder anyway, what if you were on battery, plugged in and had forgotten to have the adapter connected to the mains... you wouldn't know 'till the laptop shutdown that there was a problem.
I'm guessing if there is a way it will either be in "sounds" (right click the speaker icon in the tray) or the BIOS perhaps ?
Never known anyone want to turn it off before. -
-
Hmmm, in that case I've no idea, sorry.
Be very interesting to know if it can be done though -
Open "Device Manager" and go "View"->"Show hidden devices" then scrolls down to "Non-Plug and Pllay Drivers" click on the "+" and rightclick on the item that says "Beep". Then select "Disable" and restart your computer. Beep should be permanently disabled
If you do not see the beep there, or it doesn't disable it, then you will have to check Acer ePowermanagement (or whatever it is called) and see if there is something like "beep when power disconnected".
Anyway, good luck! -
I appreciate the help, prikolchik; however, I didn't get any love from that. I e-mailed Acer and hopefully they'll help (not sure why I didn't do this first)

ok so i've been down this path and have emailed and called acer about this. They state there is no way to disable the sound as "it is enabled by default." lame excuse but that's what they say.
I did notice that if you dont install the realtek audio drivers, then the beep doesnt happen. Also the disable beep in device manager doesnt work in win7 and the "levels" option in the sound is nonexistant in win7.
The audio beep goes away when you mute the system. easiest way would be fn+f8 -
I subscribed to find to this forum to solve this very problem, but decided to do a search first. I think it's ridiculous that you can't turn the sound off. It's not that serious, but it's annoying, and pretty damn loud.
I don't get how you can adjust basically every other sound, but they would omit an adjustment for this one.
Mooly, I don't unplug it all constantly, but I tend to plug/unplug it every couple hours because I don't like to overcharge my battery. Whenever it maxes out, I unplug the chord. Then when it's gonna die again, I plug it back in. I never leave it plugged in when I"m not using it. I heard years ago that overcharging stuff kills the battery. IDK if it's true anymore, but I still do it.
ANyway, back to the topic... Acer's stupid for not allowing us to disable the sound. -
Just a quick point on the battery... you won't overcharge it leaving it connected and on.
LiOn cells are destroyed quickly by trickle charging, so as soon as 100% is reached the charge is terminated. If you don't use the battery it will be perhaps 2 to 5 days before the charger again "tops off" the battery to replace charge lost by natural chemical processes in the cells. THis usually happens when the battery is around the 96% full mark.
You are best just ocasionally using the battery... perhaps every two to three weeks or so with occasional fairly deep discharges.
Using the battery constantly "wears" it outThey have a fairly well defined and limited number of charge/discharge cycles from new.
-
aoeud, did you get any new info from ACER?? -
Yes. I have discovered that they're useless. "It can't be disabled because it is the manufacturer's design." That's really quite frustrating, makes me want to return this, but barring that it's the best laptop for my needs... It wouldn't be so bad except the power cord is designed to slide out with the slightest force; I rarely intentionally unplug it.
-
I didn't know it was designed that way, but I guess it makes sense. I would much rather have it stay in all the time. It constantly falls out when I move the my laptop the slightest bit.
Thanks for the info. It's pretty stupid if you ask me. -
ALSO we have to small childrens, and they are sleeping close to the living room. VERY nice to wake them up just because the powerchord fell out ?
Most stupid thing ever i have seen on a notebook.
ALSO: Battery just stopped charging today, so this computer will be returned.

OMFG i need help with this too!! I just joined this forum for the sole purpose of getting this damn annoying problem solved. I bought an ACER Aspire 5740G laptop yesterday and it's my very first Acer laptop, and i'm already pissed off with the loud beelping sound!!
I go to university so don't use AC power all the time, and that's what a laptop is suppose to be for anyway, you carry it around and rely on maybe 1 or 2 hours of battery life. Unplugging the AC power is inevitable for me sometimes and it just pisses me off whenever it makes that loud beep, i tried all the options on this topic already, have checked options in ePower Management but found none useful, no options in BIOS has the option to disable beep either, and i have disabled the beep driver itself and it's still BEEPING!! AHH!! -

Hands down the most annoying/stupid thing Acer has ever done

Solution!
I have a solution, believe it or not it is the REALTEK AUDIO DRIVERS
1) Uninstall your audio driver.
2) Reboot.
3) Let windows replace them with generic HD audio drivers.
4) Enjoy never hearing the awful beep again.
-JBud -
Does doing that not cause a lot of functionality to disappear, such as the SPDIF output etc ?

I have a Lenovo N500 with the exact same problem...trying the Beep fix in device manager as we speak...

disabling the realtek drivers didn't work for windows 7 on my 4810..
had to disable the 'beep' device (non plug and play drivers) from device manager (show hidden on view panel) - seems to work fine and the annoying beeping is now gone.

the new realtek driver 2.48 may solve that beep issue: Realtek
-
Hmm.. it aint annoying at all and it isn't so loud...

***UPDATE... but I just saw this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...-disconnect-alert-sound-beep.html#post6096788 - mic isn't an issue for me yet but evidently removing the Realtek drivers is just a work-round*** -
The new v2.49 Realtek High Definition Audio Codec fixes this problem for me

I just joined this forum because I was searching for a way to disable the beeping sound without uninstalling the realtek drivers as that killed the built in mic I use for Skype. Someone earlier mentioned about the "levels" tab in XP and it does exist in windows 7.
Step 1. Open up control panel and list in "category" view and click the "Hardware and Sound" section. Under Sound click "Manage audio devices."
Step 2. Under the Playback tab click on "speakers" then click properties.
Step 3. Click on the "levels" tab and mute the "Beep" slider underneath the main speaker slider.
And that's it! No restart needed either -
-
Seems like there's a lot of different solutions, but not all of them work for everybody.
I had to install an older driver to get that slider to show up.
Realtek HD Audio 2.03 driver download from Guru3D.com
Uninstalled my current Realtek driver, Installed the one from the link above, went into Speaker Properties and there was the slider for PC Beep under Levels. Volume down, mute it, whatever, no more beep!
So that's my solution. -
I'm pretty sure version 2.49 doesn't have the slider (mentioned before). He probably has the slider due to an older driver and newer driver mixing several files. However, his mic is probably messed up in the process. -
I originally was using the Windows Update driver, but then the built-in microphone kept making cracking noises during recordings. I found that installing the Realtek HD Audio driver which has a couple enhancements for the microphone fixed that issue. Then I think I installed 2.29 to get the PC Beep level to show up (because I wanted to disable it of course) and then for some reason when I uninstalled 2.29, restarted, and then re-installed 2.51, PC Beep level seems to have stayed put, but everything else seems to work as expected (Dolby tab, limited output selection, etc.)
I have a 3820TG BTW. -
Here's an easy way around the annoying beep. Just close the lid and put the laptop to a quick sleep. It won't beep while asleep. Plug or unplug, then open the lid back up. Simple.

Just Joined to put up some good news, I've got the net book version of the Acer Aspire series Aspire ONE 722, The net book was fantastic until i've installed linux for some uni work and then this annoying beep sound occurred every time I plug in power or when power is about to die out and it wakes up everyone in the libraries quiet area or gives my lecture a heart attack.
Weird enough the there are no options in the BIOS to disable it and the windows device solution wasn't working.
BUT everyone who has this problem should try this, when booting up access the BIOS menu and reset to manufactures DEFAULT. This actually fixed the problem for me, but on the other hand i didn't initially had this problem to start with.
So the next course of action if this problem exists is to find a suitable update for the BIOS because that beep really only occur when hardware warnings and failure happens. So when low power or cord plug in, the system BIOS flags a 'beep' with hardware changes. NOTE: i'm no professional so don't exactly take my words for this step, know what you are doing, dealing with your BIOS!!!!
But seriously what's in the mind of manufacturers of these laptop products that makes these loud sharp and annoying beeps when you plug in power? Thumbs down! -
Go to your sound options by right clicking on the little speaker on the bottom right of your taskbar and clicking playback device. Right click on whatever sound device you have and click properties. Click on the levels tab on the properties window. Then you should see a selection for PC Beep. Drag that all the way down and Voiala!!!! The computer will not beep when plugged in and out anymore!!!! This is in windows 7, but i'm pretty sure its similar with other windows versions.
Hope this helps!! -
It's not a function of Windows but of the driver itself and unfortunately there are lots of drivers (or driver versions) that simply miss that slider- that's the whole problem.
-
Well it worked for me, and i had the same problem as everyone else seemed to have. I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you.
-
-
the computer can't make a noise if there isn't a program that tells it too.Uninstall the headche!!!!

I have an Acer 722, and nothing on this thread has worked. I've tried disabling the beep and the system speaker drivers in device manager. I've tried installing and uninstalling audio drivers, including the RealTek ones mentioned in this threade, and none of them will bring up the PC Beep slider. I actually tried unplugging the power cord while I had all the audio drivers uninstalled and it STILL beeped. There's nothing under BIOS, and I'm just out of ideas.
Called Acer and they gave me the same BS about not being able to disable it. If I wanted to hear crap like that, I would have gotten a Mac. I think that annoys me more the actual beep. I feel like I HAVE to disable this thing now just stick it to those s.
Anyway, if anyone knows of any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. -
-
Probably not much help but I've noticed no beep when running Window 8 consumer preview on my 9301. I haven't installed launch manager... and everything seems to work up to now.
-
I was having the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5749 when I found your post... I was able to fix it by uninstalling the speaker drivers, then reinstall with the latest driver on Acer's support site... It was the same version, but for some reason, it fixed the annoying power cord beep... let's hope it stays that way.

---SOLUTION---
Hello everyone I joined so I could let you know what worked for me after this beeping drove me mad! I'm using XP but I imagine it will be similar on others too.
Go into sound settings (by clicking the speaker icon in the bottom right corner) where it displays the volume levels for various things, but not yet what we're looking for. Click on Options, then Properties and select PC Speaker. This will allow you to change the volume or mute the beep, without muting the whole computer.
It works for me and I haven't found that it has muted any programs or anything I need yet. Time will tell! -
|||>>BEST SOLUTION<<|||
Alright, Adding On To The Solution, Using Pictures!
Note: This Works With Windows 7, Not Tested With Windows XP Or Vista. Should Work With Vista, Since They Have Similar Makeups.
Step One:
Go To The Start Menu And Search "Sound".
Next, Go To "Speakers And Select "Properties", At The Bottom Of Window.
Then, Go To The "Levels" Tab And Go Down To "PC Beep". Then Either Mute It, Move The Slider To All The Way Down, Or Set The Volume To 0.
There You Go! Enjoy! Please Reply And/Or Comment On How My Post Was, As This Is My First Time Posting EVER On Any Forum, I Just Figured This Out On My Netbook And Was So Exited -

For those of you who have had no success with disabling the power cord beep from device manager, sounds, or older versions of Realtek drivers, try this:
-Go to Control Panel.
-Open Realtek HD Audio Manager. You may need to set "view by: large/small icons" in the top right of the window.
-Click the sound tray icon and open up the volumes. If Realtek HD Audio Manager isn't there, go back to the Manager and click on one of the speakers in the picture to test left/right speaker. This will make it show in the volumes list.
-Now that Realtek HD Audio Manager is showing up in your volume bar, just mute it.
This worked very well for me. RTHDAM's sound effects are used extremely rarely anyway, mainly just to test speakers. It does nothing else. Except ofcourse beep on power cord (un)plugged. All its other functions(ambience, volume, bitrate etc) will continue to work fine. It's also the least intrusive method. -
I just wanted to say that I've just joined this forum so I could say thank you - these instructions worked perfectly (except I used the 'PC Speaker' slider).
My cable has a problem and beeps all the time. It's giving me a headache! Now my problems are solved.
Thank you!
