I just bought an Acer Aspire 3618 from Circuit City and the disk recovery CD did not come with the computer. Is this a common practice now with all laptops? Plus my sister said that I didn't need to buy the disk recovery CD because we could make our own backup CD (plus we just happen to know several people who are really good at computers). What are your opinions on this?

Yeah, almost all manufacturers have joined the "Burn your own recovery Disc" bandwagon. Until a year ago, Acer used to offer recovery discs but now they just ask the user to burn them. HP, Dell, Gateway - all do the same and they all charge around $10 if you want the recovery discs.

I would suggest burning it since all it takes some time, some CD/DVD's and is cheaper than ordering one from Acer.

Acer should have the software to burn it on the computer. Start > (All) Programs > Empowering Technology > Acer eRecovery Management. It should be located in there unless you have deleted the software manually. The rest of the steps are pretty easy. Acer has this PDF detailing the steps involved in the backup process. If you want to just get an image of the factory default backup, then goto Page 8(skip the backup to HDD process) and follow the steps from there to burn a factory image.

I think that my acer the first time I boot up start a program that says to backup the system in 4 cd's o something like that. In the acer programs must be an option to backup (like acer e-Recovery management...)
