Recently the sound has become badly distorted. I think this coincided with the installation of Media Player 11, but I can't be sure.

During boot, if I hold done the Del key, and overflow the input buffer, the sound seems to be working loud and clear. I get beep-beep-beep, very loudly.

When Windows has booted, I get virtually no sound, except a soft and distorted one. I've checked all the obvious candidates. Any suggestions ?

Hardware Acer Travelmate 220, Windows XP Home (latest) Crystal WDM codecs.

I don't know how the microphone can be related, either.

    1) Revert back to WMP 10 and see what happens. I doubt that WMP 11 is the cause of your trouble.
    2) Test your speakers through Control Panel > Sounds and see if it is a driver issue or not. Actually do this before reverting back to WMP 10.
    3) Sometimes static gets trapped in the wires. Or something like that, but removing the cable (if your have external speakers) or rebooting the machine (for internal speakers) sometimes helps.
