Acer notebooks tend to heat up very quickly when running Windows.

well if you invest in a good notebook cooler, that would definitely help any desktop replacement.

    Hi

I agree. The Aspire 5684WLMi is an excellent choice. I own one although the specs vary from country to country. Mine has a 120GB hardrive and only 1GB of RAM. It is easily the bestest computer I have owned.

Lightning quick on just about eveything on mains power. Battery power is your baby to set but still very quick for me coming from a Pentium 3 1GHZ desktop (Compaq)

Heat wise, the 5684 hardrive will run at about 58 Degrees MAX Celcius on most days after many hours of work. This includes lots of applications running at the same time.

Processor can hit 70 Degrees Celcius when running 3D MARK 2006. Never gets hotter than this though. Just for interest sake, 3D MARK 2006 score is 1400. 3D MARK 2003 is around 5000. 3D MARK 2001SE is around 15000. Pretty good stuff for a non-gaming laptop.

All in all, if I would have to choose a new laptop all over again I would still choose the 5684WLMi.

Buid quality wise, the Acer is not perfect. But for the money and performance it stands head and shoulders above the rest.

My 5684 is in daily travel use. I use it to download photo's from my Canon PowerShot A640 at customers houses and Bed and Breakfast establishments.

So far so good. Nothing is falling apart and the 5684 has no issues that I cannot deal with while with a customer.

I am gentle on a laptop though......Throw anything around and it WILL break. No matter what anybody says.

    I think you're a little misinformed.

    My Acer's cpu is idling @ 31* and hdd @ 36*.

Please tell me you consider that "hott" compared to most other machines out there.

want to double the life of your laptop.
    then get a cooling pad.
i have always used them and find they are cheap and can save on heat issue's.

    :)

My ACER get really really hot, tends to get pass 70 degrees.. HDD temp is about 40-50 degrees intensively used... so I just keep it in 600 MHz... I also have a cooling pad, but the only things it actually cools are the battery and the HDD, definitely not the CPU... but the heat might just be because it needs cleaning...
