Ok, first of all, there is a build quality sticky thread right on top of the ACER section make sure you look it over.
Second, in my opinion, this question can be answered in 2 words - it depends.

Do ACER laptops have the best build quality in the market - definitely no. BUT although it's not the best it's pretty good, especially considering the fact they are one of the cheapest laptops on the market.
Years of use? It depends. And I'd say it depends 50% of the laptop, the other 50% depends ON THE USER! You may have the best machine out there but if you abuse it and do not take care of it - like cleaning it from inside/outside, fresh re-installs, being careful when you move it around, OCing etc. - it won't last long.
ACER has it's bad fame mostly for his customer support. Here in the ACER section we've had many cases with unsatisfied with the customer support ACER users. Personally, I've never had to deal with them(for now) but I guess there is something right about it.

So, is it ACER any good? Yeah totally. Does it make the best laptops? Not really but good enough. Is it one of the cheapest? Yes, absolutely. Will I recommend ACER to someone? Yes, of course, especially if he/she is on a budget.

Okay, I will be brutally honest here:

I have been a member of the Acer forum since Feb 2007. I have gotten into trouble with my outspoken attitude.

I have taken flak from a lot of people. My reasoning still stands firm though....

    1. New lappie, make the disks.
    2. Leave the "hidden partition" or "PQ Service partition " .... alone.
    3. It will save your butt always.

Reformat or delete at your will.

    Trouble will come your way.

    Oh....I forgot:

Acer is a great product. Fanboy = no.

Proof of the pudding is that my Aspire 5684 which is going on for 2.5 years is still a pleasure to use.

I canno't find one reason to question Acer's reliability....

Acer has been just too good to me.

    Happy as ever,

    Theo

As the members before me have already said, you cannot generalize a whole brand as being good/crap, first of all its model specific, and then also laptop/user specific as well.

As an owner of 5920G I could tell you what are the specific issues with this model, and more precisely, the laptop I own. The overall build quality is good with some flex on the middle of the keyboard. The performance are also pretty amazing, especially if you consider that I paid less than 800e in July for it (specs in my sig). At least at the time and in my region I can say Acer offered the best price/performance ratio. The only issue I have is heat related. While it doesn't downcloak, restart, freeze etc. it gets hot as hell (literally :)). My GPU can easily reach 90C on load (sometimes even more) and my cores to around 70C with 25C ambient. The idle temperatures on the cores is decent (around 30-35C) but the GPU is still high (50-60C). All in all I find the cooling system insufficient on this laptop for this configuration (then again Nvidia might have screwed up as well) . Another thing I would like to be better is the screen resolution which is 1280x800, but then again I think I am asking too much for 800e and also playing games at native resolution would be hard then.

I own an old Aspire 3680 and it is still running strong and I have put it through hell, I'm not the biggest fan of Acer but it has handled everything I have thrown at it. Including plenty of CPU mods (I've taken it completely apart more times than I can remember).

Sadly my Acer is now coming to the end of its life as I'm getting a new Clevo M860TU :D but I have no bad words to say of Acer.

i have owned a acer aspire 1800 series laptop for the last 3 a 4 years now and it still runs smooth as hell.
Only problem with that laptop is that is makes noise like hell (temps get to hot i guess or something)
Now i have donated that laptop to my wife so she can fiddle around with it and she runs heavy programs like autocad / archicad / photoshop cs4 and all that and the acer 1800 all handles it fine.

Myself i have bought last week an aspire 8920g and i must say its a super machine also.
Its silent even on high loads.
ONly problem i find with this new laptop is that the keyboard is not that great as it used to be on the acer 1800 but i can live with it.

Had my 5672 for 2.5 years, never had one problem that wasn't operator induced. I completely agree with ATG, Acer makes a very good laptop that should last for years with normal use. Like anything, you take care of it, it will last.

Sound advice, Theo ( once again!), I lost count of how many threads started with... "Help Please, reformatted HDD, can't find the hidden partition, no recovery disks..."

The wife's 3680 (1.5 yrs) is as good as new. No, even better then new. With a new C2D CPU, and XP, at a very reasonable price (f***ing cheap!), it's perfect for someone who just cruises the net and email! 3 years from now she will still be using this lappy.

I will vouch for Acers reliability. We use them at work, its the only laptop we endorse.

As for quality, ill give them a notch below their reliability. One of the optical drive bezel popped out on me for some reason. (3-4 year old travelmate)

You should be overall happy with the product through out its life.

I've had my Acer Aspire 1692WLMi since 2005 November, and she's still going strong.

Been through RAM upgrade and HDD swap (80GB to 160GB), but that's about it, still using her for Aobe Premiere and Photoshop stuffs =)
