    Sounds like extortion to me.
I wouldn't pay it. Just remove the programs when you get the laptop. As to office 2007... I wouldn't pay extra for that either. 2003 is still fine. Also, a lot of people have trouble getting used to 2007. It's quite a bit different.

If you're a student you can get Office 2007 Ultimate for $60: http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx

Sure, Office 2007 takes a few weeks to get used to the new ribbon interfact, but it's much better than the Office 2003 interface and is well worth learning.

There is software you can download to remove bloatware just do a google search of the forum for bloatware removal guide and your manufacturer.

Use 2003 till you NEED 2007

Does Acer send out OS reinstall disks? If so, it's very easy to do a clean install.

Agreed. If you have 2003 stick with it unless you really want 2007.

Usually one year is fine. But that decision is entirely up to you for you to assess the risk and cost because I am not responsible if I suggest one year and then something happens after one year!

    About the Bloatware.

After removing the bloatware, exception of the Empowering Technology and Erecovery, you can update your windows and burn a DVD using Erecovery. This DVD will be a bootable image of your system.

The next time you reinstal windows it will be free of all the bloatware.
