    Recommendations as to what specifically?
I would look for any usb optical that needs only the usb port for power. The Lacie (Sam Hecht model) does this, as do most drives that are actually notebook optical drives in enclosures.

I have One and I recommend the following:

Windows XP version with 6 cell battery. The 120 GB model (w/ 6 cell) is the model I'd recommend.

For optical drive the recommendation is a slim drive that is USB powered. NewEgg had a Samsung model that was <$50, however is not listed right now. Here it is at another vendor http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=SE-S084B&c=fr&pid=4b8699bf7bf71f592551326ce4e8d4f678ff93bf5ce9e5ee396016ee24096005

Acer One is my favorite netbook as I like the layout of the keyboard AND it is available with 6 cell battery. HP Mini 1000 also has nice keyboard, but has 3 cell battery.

I had an Acer one for a couple of months. It was the AOA-150 I think? 120gb HD w/ 3 cell battery. Gave it to my sister for x-mas recently, here's my experience with it.

    Cons:
    -keyboard was a bit small
-the trackpad and location of the right/left click buttons was to awkward to get used to
-atom CPU was a little slow for some programs
    -battery life to short

    Pros:
-very bright and readible screen great for watching movies on the plane, or websurfing outside
-very portable and compact 2lbs (it fits in her day purse easily)
-didn't have any problems with hardware/software over 3 months of light use
-great value for what you get

overall if you are just looking for something to surf the net, check e-mails and do basic MS office stuff on the run this would be perfect. I ended up buying an Asus 10" eee pc 1000HA for my mom and 1000HD for my gf, the asus' screen is bigger so it's easier to see and the keyboard/trackpad layout is better and battery life is much better, but they are noticibly bigger than the Acer one. I would suggest going to a local computer store something like Microcenter, or some Best Buy's have netbooks on disply to get some hands on time with them. They are not something you want to buy unseen/unfamiliar with IMO. good luck

On the Asus the shift key is in the wrong spot and small. A worse layout, not better IMO.

6 cell battery on the One achieves > 5 hrs. and sometimes over 6 hrs.

I think before the NC10, the AAO had the best battery life.

just got one for christmas. Basically its a toy to me lol. Small nifty, with the right plugins you can play a bunch of playstation emulations. If you do get it and you have some more cash to burn i recommend:

get a stick of 1gb ram so you can 1.5gb of ram. Change the harddrive to 7200rpm. Get TinyXP.

I modded it with a touch screen too for the nintendo ds emulator(although not a lot of games work with it yet). Also theres a panel in the back where you can put a 3g modem (although it requires a bit of work) and the sim card slot is located under the battery.

trackpad does getting use to though. having it left and right side of the trackpad kinda hard at first but you get the hang of it overtime.

    i'm lovin it right now.

Thanks everyone for the information. The lack of an optical drive is holding me back now. I have not seen them in area electronic stores.

    Thanks again

Do you use an optical drive often? i've been using a netbook for about 5 months now and really don't miss the optical at all. There are times i would use it but very rarely when I'm out and about. I do have a portable one that runs off USB power only and pack that when I'm expecting to need it but it has seen almost no use.
