I would like to share some of my experiences and you decide if you would like to do it or not.

My friend and I had upgraded many notebook memories with higher speed than stocked ones and they all worked fine.

    Examples:
    - upgraded from PC100 to PC133 on Toshiba SD (forgot model number - AMD K6)
    - upgraded from PC2100 to PC2700 on Dell 650 (Pentium 3 model)
    - upgraded from PC2700 to PC3200 on HP Evo N800C
    - upgraded from PC2700 to PC3200 on a Compaq 2410 (I think) notebook
    - upgraded from PC4200 to PC5700 on his Acer notebook

All these laptops are 2 to 7+ years old and they are still working great except the Toshiba and Dell for the hard drives died, not the memory as I recovered the memory modules.

    No good.. as of today...
    I plugged in some 2gig ddr2 6400 chips today...
    They work...but not @800...
    same, if not less performance..

    Thanks for the info.
Can you also tell me if there is any significant performance increase if one goes from 2gb to 3gb (as 32bit cannot read 4gb).

Perhaps you could post what they are running at, what brand you bought, for reference, please?

That is because RAM chips can be downclocked to run at lower frequencies to maintain backwards compatibility. Certainly you can upgrade using DDR2-800 sticks, but if the maximum your chipset can take is DDR2-667, then that is what the RAM will run at it and you will have wasted extra money.

3GB will help if you multitask or use a lot of memory intensive applications as it will reduce the amount of paging done by Windows, but for daily usage, there is no perceivable improvement.

It was a gamble I was willing to take..
    No big deal..
No one else had tried it.
Perhaps a newer BIOS will support 800mhz..

No, it is a chipset limit. A BIOS update will not be able to enable support.

Er...just in case you were holding out hope or something. I think I sound kind of mean in the posts in this thread...

Just a question here but did you try running the DDR2 800mhz chip by itself or did you run it while you had the slower DDr2 667mhz chip installed? If slower ram is installed then the faster chip will automatically slow to the slower speed. If you haven't done it yet try just running the 800mhz chip by itself and see what happens.

I am asking this since you said that you have both ddr2/5300 and ddr2/6400 versions.

DDR2 800 RAM will work in the 5520, but it will only run at DDR2 667 speed because that's what the motherboard supports. So, you're wasting your money if you buy the faster RAM.
