Hey all I'm new and apparently 5-8 years late for the majority of the discussions about these laptops. I own a Aspire 4720z which I've been upgrading throughout the years. It's apparently the most common of the 4720 series based on eBay and google shopping listings, but at the same time is the worst of the series. What I do know from my research is that the 4720z is locked down compared to the other boards such as
    • Lack of the actual MXM connector but still has the pins for it on the motherboard
    • Bluescreens / kernel panics Operating Systems on 4GB of RAM, yet allows 3GB due to it having a GL960 instead of a 965
I'm looking into modifying my 4720G to at least have an MXM connector so it's not stuck on X3100 integrated graphics but I need some reference pictures to make sure I don't mess anything up and google images gives me nothing but 4720Z boards. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise if anyone knows where I could buy a 4720G mobo or 5920 laptop it'd also be greatly appreciated.

@rcmaehl these machines use very expensive yet outdated DDR2 RAM and MXM II gpus - you're looking at HD4000 level at best. Want to upgrade the **** out of some old machine? Get something with DDR3 & MXM III, at least.
p.s. I maxed out a 5930G back in the day, so I know precisely what I'm talking about.

I'll probably start upgrading a new device this tax season but I've had the 4720 for 6 years now and it's sentimental. Any advice for the new machine?

@rcmaehl it really depends on your budget and requirements. I generally suggest to get a machine with IPS display, and not older than Sandy Bridge - no matter the budget. Would be best if you create a thread in What notebook should I buy? section and tag me there.

Sorry bud, you really are late to the party and your machine would be hard to convert to MXM anyway. LONG time ago a user tried to convert 5315 to MXM, but eventually he gave-up, since he never reported past the connector's soldering. I own, quite likely, the fastest 5920G around and I must say that although it was a great experience @Starlight5 is right. Get something with MXM 3 and start from there. DDR3 is dirt cheap, MXM-A and MXM-B modules are widely available and cheaper than whatever MXM 2.1. I just don't agree with one thing, you can look at first gen i7 machines as well, since there are some with 16:10 panels, if you care about the aspect ratio, since with Sandy everything went 16:9. Good luck!
