I purchased a lemon 5562WXMi that died after two days with massive memory errors. It seems that the service centre will not respond for a week and I have no idea as to how long they will take to service the machine. Therefore, I was thinking that I could find whether one of the RAM modules was defective myself.
The machine has two modules, but taking each one out and trying it I might be able to figure out the defect and get the machine running again.
However, will this void warranty? Would it be better to just send it in and wait the 3 weeks or however long it takes.

I can't speak for your specific laptop, but: look at the user manual. If the user manual that came with the laptop explains how to open the memory bay, and doesn't explicitly state that your warranty will be void if you do so, then they don't have a leg to stand on.

Memory is generally considered a user upgradeable part. Sometimes the second slot is located under the keyboard and will be harder to access.
-
No opening the memory cover will not void the warranty, whether on the bottom or under the KB.
-
Can't you take it back to the store you brought it at and ask for another machine?

there should be a sticker in the memory module that if it breaks, it voids only the memory warranty not the whole PC, but the supplier told me that if you void the memory wrranty you can still claim warranty at the memory manufacturer but not on acer anymore, but i think that would be a long shot. anyway, if youre carefull you can open the memory module without breaking the sticker, just use the sticker as a pivot when opening the module.

I can specifically tell you that Gateway / eMachines *do* void warranties on user-installed memory under the keyboard on their laptops. They actually offer the ability to return the laptop to them to do the upgrade, and provide no details on accessing it in the user manual. -
My supplier mentioned that opening the memory cover does not void the warranty, after all it is a common thing to do.

How do you open the memory cover of Acer Aspire 5002? I already unscrewed the two screws on the bottom but the cover still won't come out. Even if i slide it down, it still won't come out when i pull upwards. My brother in law is still looking for the users manual so i'm just relying on my instincts as of now.

There was nothing to indicate voiding the warranty on my Aspire 1362 WLMi. In fact it had already been upgraded from factory spec by the retailer but covered by Acer's warranty.
I'd say that user removable covers with no warranty sticker are fine (which means I can also upgrade the wi-fi and modem cards assuming such components are available for purchase). I cannot however upgrade the CPU as that involves taking the cover apart and Acer put a warranty sticker over one of the screw holes. Hard disc... not sure. There is no instruction in the manual to upgrade it but I'm told I can just pull the disc out from the battery bay but is that detectable that I've done that? -
There are no warranty stickers on my Acer laptop protecting the memory/wifi/processor/hard drive enclosure. These are stand user upgradeable parts.
Memory enclosure needs to be pried open, unscrew and use a flat head screwdriver to open the enclosure. -

I have 2 acer aspire laptops and i have removed all the panels from both of them.
their are plastic clips around the edges of the covers and it can be really hard to remove them.
I just worked my way around the edges slowly, their should be a raised up area for you to get your fingernail in you have to use quite a bit of force, make sure you have removed all the screw!!!
regards
John.
Does openning the RAM cover void warranty?
