I bought the Acer 1410 with the single core SU3500 Core 2 Solo CPU. It looks like Acer decided to release them with the SU2300 now, which is dual core at 1.2GHz (compared with 1.4GHz of SU3500).

Does anyone have any benchmarks comparing the two, and/or if they have a solid understanding how much better it would perform compared with the SU3500? I also see that the single core AS1410 with Celeron M @ 1.3GHz sells at the same price as the dual core. I'm confused.

Yes, there are current two AS1410 models that have the Celeron M 743 and the Celeron dual-core SU2300. They are sold at the same price of $400 but the ones with the single-core 743 processor come with a 250gb HDD whereas the dual-core SU2300 version has a 160gb HDD. So you choose between a roomier hard drive or better processor.

Regarding the discontinued AS1410 models with Vista and the SU3500 processor, I hear that processor has a TDP of 5W vs. 10 in the other models. So I am guessing it is more power friendly and emits less heat.

If I have the SU3500 model and pair it with the higher capacity battery in the AS1810 Timeline models, should I get better battery life than the dual-core Timeline models?

Right but what's the performance improvement of the dual core SU2300 over the SU3500? Looks like the SU3500 models have been discontinued already.

BTW, Windows 7 runs beautifully though on the SU3500 AS1410.

Hmmm, wondering if it's worth my while to sell mine and go for the su2300. Although the 3DMark06 for SU3500 and SU2300 are nearly identical, which gaming is my primary reason for a faster CPU. I can't justify the $599 for the 1810T, however. But considering I got my 1410 for $350, eBay 1410's seem to be selling about $350 used, so it'd be a $50 upgrade.

I don't think it's worth it. For that $50 you could just hire a technician to do the overclocking mod and boost gaming performance.

Good point. By the way der_mali, I tried the Vista drivers in Win7 and got a worse 3DMark06 score than using the Win7 drivers. But your results show the opposite.

Any word that an dedicated GPU will be coming to a 1410 type notebook? The 1410 to me is the perfect machine. Just needs like a 9400m GS or something similar.

Maybe it's because you use 64bit OS. It's difficult to find the best configuration, because this weird dual channel boost mode is a tricky b*tch. So far it is only confirmed to work in Vista 32bit. I can't test Win7, because I haven't got my uprade DVD, yet.

Well, they are not completely impossible to upgrade, just far harder than socketed processors. For instance, I have seen those with the original Asus EEE models with the ULV Celeron M processor replace them with a ULV Pentium M processor.

I am curious about the heat, noise and battery life of the SU3500 processor in the now discontinued 1410 models and processors in the new 1410/1810 models.

Wikipedia tells me that the SU3500 has a TDP of 5W whereas the other processors have a TDP of 10W.

Would this make a noticeable difference in fan noise, heat output, battery life?
Suppose I put the higher capacity batteries from the 1810T/TZ models into an SU3500 model to make things even. Would I get higher battery life from the SU3500, the other processors or around the same?

I know the order in which models would give me the best performance, but I'd also like to know the order in heat, noise and battery. Battery is more tricky since the higher end models have higher capacity batteries also.

    Rahul,

My hunch, and I stress hunch very heavily, is that under normal usage, that the fan noise, heat output and battery life between the SU3500 and SU2300 will be very very similar. SU2300 might be a little bit less than the SU3500 in terms of battery life, but nothing huge.

As stated often, the "Max TDP" values only occur when you're pegging the CPU near or at 100% of usage. SU3500 having a 5.5W TDP and the SU2300 having a 10W TDP; a difference of 4500mW.

Both the SU2300 & SU3500 are fabbed with the exact same architecture, VID Voltage Range, etc. and normally with these types of CULV and Atom-based machines, the CPU usually isn't the largest user of power from the machine. It's the combination of the LED/CCFL backlighting, chipset power requirements, WiFi, Bluetooth, HDD, IGP's, etc.

    Cheers,
    Kermee

800MHz @ 6-6-6-18 is rather pointless. Sure you can tell other people how you're running 800Mhz, but the latencies are actually longer (slightly) @ 800MHz (6-6-6-18) than they are @ 667 (5-5-5-15).

my su2300 gateway 11.6 netbook with the 4500MHD chipset and 2GB ram got 589 on 3d mark 06. Does that mean it is better than the su3500 with its 3mb cache?

589 vs 572 is hardly anything to consider "better" ~ 3%. It could be due to cache or fact that you get a little advantage out of the dual core. I dunno. The SU2300 is a good chip and has the advantage of having dual core.

Right, it is cheaper, and I am running 2 gigs vs the su3500 running 4. either way, i am impressed by how fast 7 runs on it and when i bought it for 415$, the su3500 was $500.

Nice, I was going to get the acer 1410 su2300 but ended up with the gateway ec1345u becasue it had the 4500MHD graphics and the acer line was not offering it yet. I wanted the acer though because it didn't have a gateway cow box on the inside graphics to stare at... ;)
I guess they are the same exact computor, it says acer group on the ser#

After (shortly) owning a 1810 with SU3500 and a 1810tz with SU4100 I do think the single core is a bit more quiet, especially under stress.

During normal usage both are quiet enough for me. I'm quite picky, I like my laptops very quiet.

800 GHZ ram vs 667 GHZ ram - is there any difference in processing power? Why did Acer choose 667 - just because it is less expensive?

Where is the best place to buy either 800 or 667 DDR2 ram in the US?

    Thank you

RAM is on a huge pricing upswing right now unfortunately. I picked up 2x2GB DDR2 800 for $56 which is apparently a really good price, I haven't followed RAM prices since the days of the $15 4GB DDR2 kits.

I just got the SU2300 Acer and I'm messing around with it. There were so many SU3500 netbooks out there in large supply, but the SU2300 variety have been pretty rare (at least lately).

How do the SU2300 and SU3500 compare as far as battery consumption?

Also, I tried undervolting mine, but it won't go below 6X at 0.90 volts down from stock of 0.95 volts. How low can you undervolt the SU3500?

    The performance difference is minimal.

The difference is minimal. Under full load the SU3500 lasts longer, but it's also less powerful then the SU2300. So it evens out in normal usage.

Ah no. Single tasks the 3500 is most likely to win easily since its faster and has the 3mb cache. My 723 ran well with single tasks. But thefact is, if you want to watch a movie , surf the the internet, and run a game in the background, a single core simple isn't going to cut it.

It would be nice for intel to underclock these even more...I mean they should go down to 800mhz dual/quad cores ulv for laptops...that would be awesome.

Ah no ;) That's only true for single threaded single tasks.

Multi threaded single tasks and multiple tasks will be faster on the SU2300.

That's why I said the SU2300 is more powerful. Which is true in most real life scenario's.

all games that "run" on on 4500mhd are singelthreaded !!!

so for gaming the su3500 clocked @ 1.75ghz with dualchannel ddr800 IS the best choice ... ;)

the newer multithreaded games doesnt even run on SU7300 !!!

DDR3 is on an up-swing too, it has more to do with NAND pricing than anything else. SSDs are on a price hike too since NAND has been on a steady climb since around February.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227393

I paid $83 for that drive at the end of February.

Also when you're playing a game in Windows, the game can run on one core, the background Windows processes, which are always running, can run other the other core.

I'd personally always go for the SU2300.

IF you can do the OC mod. Thanks Inteks, but I chickened out. I just couldn't work with those super tiny components, especially after botching destroying the resistor. A buddy of mine thinks he can do it. I just have to meet up with him sometime to get it done.... but am looking forward to a 1.7GHz OC!

How can that be? The SU2300 is categorized as a Celeron and the SU3500 is a Core 2 (Solo). There must be other differences. Intel's webpages state the price for an SU3500 is twice that of an SU2300. How can they possibly be the same architecture?

To make matters even more confusing, the SU4100 is classified as a Pentium. Do these names even mean anything at all? Look at the performance benchmarks. It's enough to drive me to AMD. I'm currently looking at models with the Athlon Neo X2 chip with Radeon 3200 or 4200 graphics.

These names are pure marketing. They all share the same architecture.

The only thing AMD has over intel is the HD3200, which performs a little better than Intel 4500. Battery life, heat and CPU performance of Intel are better.

I'm familiar with heat issues with AMD chips but those issues never caused any real problems for me. And then there is the cost issue. Also, there is the HD4200 graphics in addition to the HD3200. I read that AMD uses a different method for RAM access that bypasses the need for large L2 cache ("HyperTransport").

Would you say that with cost in mind that the newer AMD chips are better performers? The Turion II Ultra looks pretty good but that's a TDP 35W CPU and not really germain to this thread.

In the CULV market space the only serious AMD option I know of is the L335 (X2).

It's an ok option for people who need better gaming performance than Intel 4500.

Personally I'd rather have the SU2300 with intel 4500 because I'm not into gaming. This combination plays all 1080p video including Youtube HD.
