When I use to plug my laptop into the mains you could see the screen got a lot brighter as though it was a power surge. For some reason that no longer happens the display is quite dull and tough to read unless in a dark room! :(

There was a distinct difference to screen brightness between 'High performance' and 'Power saver' mode. This is no longer the case and the laptop seems stuck in power saver brightness!
    Any help would be appreciated.

Fn + Up Arrow should increase the screen brightness.

Have you tried changing the brightness before getting into windows? If that doesn't do anything it might means that your ccfl is dying...

Managed to sort it out! Had some problems finding the correct versions, but needed the Acer empowering framework, and then the epower management utility. Don't know how I found it, must have been luck, as I've been trying for ages, and couldn't get the right versions anywhere!
Anyway, thanks very much for the help.

but if you deleted all the empowering junk but left the launch manager in place.
you don't need all the acer junk as all they are is a cleaner interface to the same software that windows already has...
FN+< or> arrows/direction keys turns brightness up and down(4 acers and its the same on all of them) or you have switched the backlight off,in that case you would see nothing.FN+F6 toggels back light on and off.

I put a bigger (250GB) hard drive in, so had a clean (non-acer) install. I just couldn't get the screen bright enough using the Fn key, or any of the display settings.
I've installed the framework and the epower management, and thats all. Don't need/want/use any of the other junk that can be installed.

and most of it is junk lol.
the one bit you have to keep is the launch manager, without that all the media keys don't function :(

    all the best
