Hi, just wanted to sign up and post this solution for anyone else having the same problem as me because I have spent a TON of time trying to figure out how to get rid of that repetitive cricket sound that comes out of my Travelmate 4670 speakers and also any other headphones / speakers I have hooked up to the headphone jack.

Go into Device Manager and disable your infrared device. That's it. It completely solved the problem for me. I also re-enabled and disabled the infrared device a few times to see if the problem came back and went away and sure enough it did.

Hope it works for others as well :D

You SHOULD be able to get rid of this noise also by muting your microphone, since that is usually the part that picks up the IR interference. That should help those crazy people who actually want to USE the IR :D.

my microphone has actually been muted for months from previous attempts to resolve this issue and the problem persisted regardless  ... the chirping definitely returned everytime i re-enabled the infrared device today and disappeared as soon as i disabled it and the microphone was muted the entire time... i have no idea what's going on technically but there must have been some other interference going on besides something being picked up by the microphone... unless i needed to actually disable the microphone vs. just muting it... either way, problem solved

Strange. I haven't owned a computer with IR for about 6 years now, but I remember muting the microphone working great for killing the annoying chirp.

mrsolid, you're a GENIUS!! ... it worked!! -- i have a Compaq nc6400 & have suffered the chirp-chirp noise basically as long as i have owned the computer -- Amplified over external speakers, it is unbearable through headphones --
And now, thanks to you, it's gone!! It would have never occurred to me to disable the infrared.

Insert a deep bow in homage here.
