    Background:
Installing factory-fresh (? :p ) Vista via the glorious Acer PQSERVICE hidden partition (thanks Creatz for a wonderful post).

Managed to get Vista setup working, but it's prompting me:
Please enter the Empowering Technology password:

...with a box below it for me to type it in.

Is this password user-created or some default thing?
How do I get past this?

Yes, its a user created password, but if you are lucky, if you enter a blank password, it will tell you its wrong, then give you a hint....lady luck might smile upon you with a password......or a good hint....

just did this on a customer laptop 20 mins ago

    If it's the default one, I think it's 000000

    Mucho thanks guys.

Found another post while looking for answers with some more info, too.

Password in plain text. Cool :)

Allowed me to go in and go nuts.

    Hi all.

Had very same problem! After hours of guesses for password I was forced to hack into PQSERVICE hidden partion and alter the file.

Just wanted to add that it isn't nessassary to load PC from boot image if you have operational OS. Niether tweaks with PTEDIT prog is needed.

I simply used Acronis Disk Director to show app partion, and I was amased that this prog was able to alter the AIMDRS.DAT file on the fly, BTW file was located in root of PQSERVICE disc.

    Good luck
