Hello people , i am new to Acer erecovery , but old on repairing computers.
I did try hard to find ready answers about how it works the erecovery in this forum, and got in return mostly confusing ppl and half answers.
I will present few details " Basics " about the erecovery for Win XP - Home & Pro .
First of all , the erecovery does not work with NTFS partitions ,
DO NOT MAKE ANY ...
Why ?? simply because if you select to save one backup file , in the partition that are NTFS , the erecovery will fails to do it.
http://support-web.acer-euro.com- ERECOVERY
Second .. About the original Acer restoring DVD " to factory default " .
This DVD can be made by selecting the first option on the software,
as .... Recovery settings : Create backup files and change password.. NEXT
Selection No 2 : Burn image to disk: Create back up disk...... NEXT
1. Factory default image .
E:\ name of your DVD recorder . ....... NEXT 30 minutes of patience and a blank DVD in the burner ...
Ok your DVD is ready ... what is in it ??
1) If you explore this DVD from windows , you will see only driver files & applications .
2) The DVD contains also the Windows XP OEM version , in a special form, that it can be used only by the erecovery software .
In simple words , you can not use this windows on other systems .
3) What version of windows are on the DVD ?
My are XP-Home: EULAID:XPSP2_RM.O_HOM_OEM_EN
4) How can i use this Windows ?
This DVD are bootable 100% , the only that you need to do , are to get in to the BIOS F12 , and select as FIRST boot device the DVD drive .
Tip : even if you set the DVD drive as first boot device , at the second reboot , the Bios it will change it back to hard drive automatically.
Booting with erecovery DVD ....
Black screen at start .... text shown at the bottom of your screen ...
1 Loading RAMDISK ( no user interaction )
2 Starting eRecovery ( no user interaction - language selection )
3 Boot screen asking " Restore system - overwrite all files on C:/ ?
Yes YES ... do it baby !!![]()
Next automatic steps ,
1) C: drive formated
2) windows XP special image decompress to hard drive .
3) System reboot by it self, DVD ejected by it self .
4) XP boots and finalize installation , no XP CD key entered or needed.
5) XP reboots the system for the semifinal stage .
6 ) Semifinal stage ... basic very useful Acer software installed .
7) Reboot and all Acer and other hardware drivers installed too .
8 ) Last Reboot and your system are ready for action , perfect and strong.
Myths and tales ...
The Factory default image DVD , can recover busted Acer boot record , by just installing it on the laptop...... ( Alt - F10 on boot not function)
No way people .. The Factory default image DVD, made by your computer, does not do that .
I will speculate , that ACER did that deliberately.
Only the factory made DVD will do that , repair the boot record , and store the files on the hidden partition , but not for free .
I will add also as proof one picture, shown the Lets called Dos based recovery,
so to see how it looks like .
Thanks for your time .![]()
Notes :
1) If you have delete the hidden partition and files , its no more possible to create the " Factory default image" DVD.
2) If you have create the " Factory default image" DVD , you can restore your system at any time , By keeping in your hard drive the three partitions structure , and always at FAT32 .
Disk 0 - Part 0 (hidden ) 4GB
Disk 0 - Part 1 C: (size not matter) Max 120GB
Disk 0 - Part 2 D: (size not matter) Max 120GB
Fat32 limit for 16bit applications are 127.53 GB , then its possible to get corruption on your data .
So , one reasonable choice will be to stay at 120GB, and if you have larger drive made another partition.
Disk 0 - Part 3 E: (size not matter) Max 120GB
.

My story ..
I got a second hand , Acer 2414WLMi from Ebay about 240€ .
This system was on Slovakia ... UK Seller
All this 10 days of waiting , from the auction and after, i tried to educate my self on Acer tips and tricks .
I have the system for three days in my hands , and i realize that i also have broken ACER boot record ... Alt F10 - does not work .
Lucky me , the first hidden partition are perfect.
I found good info on this forum , thats why i decided to contribute my findings.
My wish list are, to repair the boot record , and to manage , to back up the hidden partition.
So to be used on other larger drive that i plan to get. -
About the confused souls , i am one of them .
But in my case, its a temporary state . -
Well it looks that today i am very fast ....
I manage to unhidde the hidden partition ..
I repaired the master boot record .. Picture No 1
I managed to boot from the hard drive Alt - F10
(For start i got black screen for 45 seconds or so , then started working.)
picture No 2 & No 3 .
Look the amazing .... Speed indicator 500 Mb per second , compare this number with the erecovery made by DVD disk ... WOA !! ( Picture at the top post) Picture No4 .
Acer installer loads drivers and patches automatically - finalizing installation .
Picture No5
As about the PQSERVICE files , i all ready copied them on the visible partition ACERDATA .. mission accomplished .
Next stop burning them on DVD

And as last , this thread are educational .
All the solutions are on the table , use them at your risk. -
Okay kiriakost - take a deep breath. Check everything you have posted with your guide. Make sure that it all works properly. And is accurate.
Then us regulars here will try our best to keep your guide on the first page.
You are trying to help Acer owners with your positive input.
That is always a good thing.
Thank's and Cheers,

This thread are fresh and active ...
I did fall in one small problem.
Now that everything works , i have 30 seconds delay to boot to XP, after every Bios boot .
Even if the D2D are disabled or enabled.
It looks like, the master boot record stored at the wrong place,
and the system needs a time out of 30-40 seconds , before starts to boot properly.
I am looking over the problem, right now.
I am not God , but i am giving my battle here .. any help are welcome .
What happen to me was that , by unhidden the partition , i boot , and it took the letter F :
I run the command in to it ...
Now i am thinking it over ... and i think that the proper action would be to copy and run the files from the partition C:\ .
I am testing this right now ... -
i've always gone over to NTFS after clean install of xp pro.
but i leave the PQ well alone.
the D2D still worked fine and only touched/formatted C:
but did convert C: back to Fat32.
Even clean install using DVD did the same as D2D.
nice thread,
cheers,
Phil

Hello people i found the cure ...
Windows XP recovery console command: Fixmbr
What ever the Acer boot sector software does , it can easily undone by the XP recovery console . ( you have to install it first )
Type at the run menu c:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
You will get a nag screen about missing files , closed it , one new windows wizard will pop up , asking you to download and install files from web upgrade,
say YES !!
So i ended up , to have discover one safe way , to do and undo things with out the risk of data loss.
But now i do not have Alt - F10 any more !!
I am dead ... need to sleep ... tomorrow the rest .. -
Hmmm interesting .... the XP Home version , looks to have limitations, that the XP Pro By Acer, does not have !!
Very interesting -
most excellent version of a walk thru....
i've read it atleast 5 times... and i don't even own an ACER that shipped w/ XP! -
Thanks bigozone .
Ok back to the problem .
The problem are the 30-40 seconds delay that its possible to effect the system boot up, to XP partition .
The XP boot are always fast, if get started.
So far i found in the Web , both stories happening .
This first : complete success by the first attempt .
The second : Boot delay , that no one had a clear answer of what cause it.
I am old school trained , Dos and Win .
And started to explore the engine of the file MbrwrWin.exe
Translation Master Boot Record writer for Windows . exe =(execute module) .
If some one run it with the help question mark - MbrwrWin.exe ?
Will get the list of actions, that this module are capable of .
The linux boys , have similar tool for mastering - control, Boot records ,
called as Brug .. or something like that .
This is the point were the story gets complicate ....
I did manage to control the boot record , by programing it with the MbrwrWin
console , but only few commands are known to me .
I am not here to teach programing , thats why i will stay silent , until to find ,
if there is one workaround , that most people will follow at easy.
Ok, and two words about the file rtmbr.bin
The MbrwrWin.exe module , are able to record the boot record on file , and load a file as boot record .
The rtmbr.bin are the ACER boot record , contracted to receive Bios commands , and to keep hidden (The famous hidden partition ) .
All the above are the 95% of the theory , of how erecovery works.
I only need to find , the harder to get, 5% .
Only then i will relax .
Take care . -
i can understand your idea of staying silent until you have a simple easy to follow fix...
and i have been trying to keep up w/ what you are doing.. and i have a theory.... which may be bad wrong.... but it could put you on the trail of the correct answer... i'll PM you some of my thoughts in a few minutes..
right now i'm teaching class on DOS BIOS FLASHING (via PM of course)
if i posted that PUBLIC w/o proper warnings and disclaimers many people could corrupt thier BIOS,,, and i only know how to recover my own -
Hahahahaha oh yes , i need very much a friendly shoulder to rest my tears,
right now .
I have lost track a bit , and all the info that i found by googling are ,
wiseguys trying to rip off victims , by selling them good for nothing DVDs
as notebook recovery software .
The most easy for me, would be to scream ...
Some one !! one NAPP DVD 2410. Help !!!
But i can use also and the hard way too. ( Fix it your self ) -
-
PROPS for the hard work you've put in!! -
Ok , here is how the game works .
The files at the hidden partition are the treasure .
I will use simple words, so to be understandable to the many .
From windows the Acer recovery application , every time that we need to make one factory default, set of CD's or DVD , it opens one hypothetical bridge , between the hidden partition and the Windows XP .
The application collects all the files and preparing them to get copied.
And they do .
The next question will be ......... what are the difference then ? between the files in the burned DVD , with the ones in the hidden partition ?
Answer ... None But !!
The DVD uses special structure to become bootable , and the Hard disk uses OTHER ways to boot and start the recovery process .
The hidden partition with out the proper Boot record does not boot .
The recovery does not start.
But even with damaged boot record , the software in it, are usable for the windows utility , to create the factory default DVD .
Thats why i am getting so in depth , about the boot record issue,
If i manage some how , to remove this delay at boot, of the 30 seconds.
I would have reveal the ACER's secret how-to.
And i would have fix my laptop too , i am not looking to become public hero ,
i am a technician in need, right now . -
For the history ....
Acer did not discover the wheel with the D2D and eRestore .
Dell also have a similar system, Dell System Restore by Symantec . (DSR)
Identical operation , and files .
But the Dell MBR stays active for 2 seconds , not 30 as in my story.
The truth are that i have read lots of pages , and still i am stuck.
I asked for help , from a specialist about MBR issues , i will wait and see .
If any positive comes from that direction , i will post again. -
GOD Bless !! the man who wrote the software OSL2000
This worthy programmer did the amazing ...
http://download.cnet.com/OSL2000-Boot-Manager-Platinum-Edition/3000-2094_4-10040998.html
(Mod Note:OSloader 's home page may be compromised, so use the above link to download the program)
This is a smart MBR , with a simple installer - uninstaller.
That installs only the smart MBR . ( the installer works in windows environment)
It pop up one screen after BIOS boot , you select the partition that you like to boot , and it boot !! simple as that !!
With it, you do not need to hide - unhide partitions , or use any Acer files .
The erecovery starts in seconds , if the first partition get selected ( partition with out name ) .
This are the most bullet proof solution , even for non expert people .
Amazing ..... to launch the eRecovery process become a toy with this software.
Part No2 - only for experts .
I found in depth info about rebuilding , the Acer MBR .
But i had not make it yet to work . ( but i am still researching it)
Acer and BenQ uses exactly the same methods and files .
But !! BenQ offers the engine that creates the MBR from scratch in public.
The pages that describes how it works are on Chinese .
And Google translation reveal parts of the text .
I managed to download the files , but i get an error message so far, that it looks that i can by pass it , the error message tells me that the software cannot locate the partition PQSERVICE ... i unhide it, and still no go.
If some one cares to explore more this root , search for " Winstmbr.exe "
If some one likes to research the BenQ solution with me , just PM me, and i will start a new Topic for it .
The great news are that any Newby can now boot the erecovery , as to was a toy . -
i'm gonna try that on the 4530 i'm having stopcode errors with
that 7B stop code is most often caused by boot sector virus infection, and while i don't think this thing has a virus but i'm gonna use an ultimate boot CD to run command line virus sanner after flashing the BIOS
then try the reinstall!!!
then i'll use this procedure to rebuild the MBR after creating all new partitions... then try a regualr install but in IDE mode to make sure the SATA drivers aren't needed! -
If i remember correctly , with the Fdisk , you can run the command (Format MBR) .. i have long time to use it , i do not remember 100% .. but i think that it erases the MBR, and the new one recreated automatically , from the second MBR , stored on the HD.
This move will kill any infection. -
you are correct... it just copies the second MBR... i just wander if anyone has found a way locate MBR #2 and infect it as well?
i figure some hex editing of the MBR it's self should reallly remove it...
what i'll do is save a copy of the MBR to thumb drive,,, and then delete it or replace it with the copy of the second,,, then i'll modify the replacement MBR and save a copy of it too!!!!
....
then install and try using "current partitioning info".. it may help -
About the main story ...
I found and tested and another boot loader,
called as Star Tools - Bootstar .
Nice software , but for more advanced users .
The BenQ story came to become , an dead end, for me.
My current HD , originaly formated by Acer , does not accept to get the boot record installed from this software.
I prefer to use a demo boot loader , if i need to activate the erecovery,
and thats it.
I did boot with one Reatogo XP Boot DVD , i unhide the PQSERVICE and made an image with Norton 9 , with this booting option , i got the partition,
named as C:\ PQSERVICE .... very important if i need to restore it on a new Hard Drive.
So far .. so good .. People if you find that the Acer Hokus Pokus ALT-F10 fails to be restored , just smile , and move on at the current options .
They are cheaper than 70 , the price that Acer asks for a new DVD recovery disk , in Greece .
Thanks for your time .. -
In the past i have cure many hard drives , from stupid dos infections.
And stupid ... messages as .. I am a virus ...
distraction countdown .. blablabla..
Modern viruses can kill the MBR temporally.
But the Fdisk will cure anything and everything. -
glad to know....
but that means my 7B stop code is not due to a infected MBR then...
which only leaves a driver incompatibility -
Off topic ...
Your 7B alone does not tell much to me ...
There are more letters with it 7BXXX E ... i need the total description, so to make my mind about it . -
just sent you a link to the original thread where i've discussed my problem in more detail...
-
Ok , lets see, if it will be in time , any hero to combat at my side ,
the Acer MBR battle.
Extra info : The Hero must have very strong armor . -
Hello,
I have an Aspire 3000 and I try to re-install using the recovery CD's that was given by the compagny when I bought the laptop.
After I get theses steps:
"Black screen at start .... text shown at the bottom of your screen ...
1 Loading RAMDISK ( no user interaction )
2 Starting eRecovery ( no user interaction - language selection )
3 Boot screen asking " Restore system - overwrite all files on C:/ ?"
I insert the 2nd installation CD and I get the message "Recovery32, cannot find preload.tag for SetBootlni" and the laptop reboot itself and then I get the message "NTLDR is missing"
Can someone help me on that? -
try this link out it talks about that problem
-
Thanks for that link, I have searched a lot for the NTLDR issue and this one help.
But now when windows is about to boot, it tells me "the installation is not complete..." so I have to complete the windows installation first.
Like I said in my previous message though, as I try to reinstall with the Acer recovery CD's, in the middle of the installation process, I get the message "Fail in read data from a file" ...."Recovery32, cannot find preload.tag for SetBootlni" -
do you still have the D:acerdata partition??
i've seen acer recovery disks fail due to not finding a D: partition..
also... are you restoring from disks?? if so have you tried to restore using the ALT + F10??
to use that method you must have D2D enabled in the BIOS and the HIDDEN partition must still be there! -
I dont know what is a partition, I didnt touch any of that.
Yes I'm restoring with the 4 Acer recovery CD/DVD's that came with the laptop when I bought it. I did many format in the past on this laptop and never had such issue.
I tried to restore using Alt+F10, and I made sure D2D was enabled but nothing happened. -
But this topic are educational ..... and the target group for it , are people that have at list .... good basic technical knowledge .
You need some live help , from a person who will troubleshoot your own mistakes, and undo them.
This thread clearly presents , everything that you need to know.
If you skip any info from the above , your restoration will fail .
Simple as that .
Act smart , get some live help ... from a real technician. -
In Greece we say ( this story are for laugh and cries ) , the meaning are a total confusing story .
Today i was killing my time searching on the ACER FTP ...
and here is my finding.
ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/empowering_technology/acer_erecovery_management.pdf
And
http://www.acerpanam.com/flex/ACER/acerSupportSolution.cfm?id=853
Well i am not a passioned ACER fun mate , it just happen to get an ACER laptop , and i got innovated mostly to get an ACER ,
of the honest " quality vs price ratio" , that ACER follows for years now.
But i still get pleasant surprises , the last two weeks that i do deep searches, on their FTP , i have realize .... That they have try to help the people , but their help looks as hidden in my eyes.
Any way , even if the FTP looks as a "story for laugh and cries",
the most important stuff , are here and on display .
. -
Ok my moment had come ..
And with it, the new WESTERN DIGITAL WD1600BEVE 160GB 2.5'' ATA .
I install the blank Hard drive , and i booted from the DVD ( restore system default) .
This fist message as the process started was " Formating your Hard drive "
Something totally new to me , at list from the ACER DVD !!
The process is active , so i will inform for the upcome soon .
Question : Why i do that , reporting this details ?
Well , i had realize that the WEB its very poor about info related to :
Acer TravelMate 2410, Aspire 3610 and Extensa 2600.
Thats why i like to left some info in this forum , helping them if they ever need help.
With them , many others will be helped too .
Ok back to my story , 70% done so far , erecovery builds the system .
This is my first test , with erecovery and the 160GB drive , if i did not like the upcome , i will start over with new tools .
So far i am testing the ACER method . -
Ok, here are the results from the miracle
I got one single partition as large my drive are !!
I got all the space , minus 7% slack , from the file system.
ACER eManager , has no recovery icons.
The laptop , its operational and ready to go.
No i will not keep it that way , this was a test .
Next step = To make the new drive, as to was, an Original ACER one ( partitions and files) .
Something that bothers me , just for the history .... i did passed the 48 LBA barrier .. did I ??
.Attached Files:
-
-
Ok, i did it .
With the Acronis Disk Director Boot disk .... i copied all three partitions from the 40GB hard drive to the 160GB hard drive .
The 40GB HD was on a USB to IDE external box.
PQSERVICE size unchanged 3.125 MB .
My choices was ACER as 48GB - ACERDATA as 108 GB ,all FAT32.
And the most important than all , are that Acronis, can make a copy of the ACER MBR , from the one drive to the other , but only on demand !!
You have to click on the Hard disk icon , thats is in front of the horizontal line with the listed partitions , of its drive .
And you have to right click it, so to get the option.
My new hard drive is ready , i had double test if the erecovery works.
And now its time to load software and updates .
In other words , i am done victorious .
( The HD speed got tripled or more )
Last tip : About the Acronis , its a extremely useful tool , but not get fooled , the called Freeware Trial version , does not do the job . -
Ok i did all the hard work to make the erecovery to work , and now i enjoy the gain from it .
Many people wonder , what are the gain to restore the system in a naked form, with out software updates and you software .
Well if you follow Doctors orders, you will backup your fully updated and personalized system , with the eRecovery , and the backup file , will be stored on ACERDATA ..
As soon you make one , the PQSERVICE files getting notified about the existence of the backup file , and if you boot by ALT-F10 , you will notice that eRecovery now offers you the choice to use that Backup file as restoration material too.
So here it is ... with few clicks , everything comes back as it was at the date that you did the backup.
BEWARE .... The eRecovery on my system showed one BUG .
The backup splits it self in files of 600MB , and if they are more than 4GB in total , the erecovery names the folder as DVD1 , and the extra files moved out side of it ... and if you try to restore , the software reports that the last part is missing ??? and the recovery fails AND you are stuck for good.
What you had to do are :
1) To set your system (folder options) to be able to see hidden folders.
2) navigate in to the backup file D:\erUserBk\DVD1\images\
3) you will see one list of files,
called as :
acerbp01.wsi
acerbp01.001
acerbp01.002
acerbp01.003 etc etc ....
4) From the folder D:\erUserBk\ collect any acerbp01.xxx files , and move them to the D:\erUserBk\DVD1\images\ so to be with the others one.
If you do that, the eRecovery would be your best friend
Question : Why eRecovery fall in this Bug ? ... well ask ACER .
I had to step on the Banana and fall , so to be able to tell the story !!
. -
I feel the need to add few words,
in relation with the boot delay issue of the MBR .
The ACER Master Boot Record , disliked the new DVD recorder that i exchanged from the Day 1 , that i got the laptop .
By inserting back the ACERs choice Pioneer DVD recorder,
all this delay symptoms before OS boot , were eliminated.
So, i ended using the Pioneer DVD recorder, just to save my self from the problem.
After all this time using the ACER laptop, i can tell that erecovery is a well made software , but works well only if you follow and accept the rules of the game.
With the knowledge that i have now , i could write the same thread with less words .
But no , its better to stay that way , so to offer all the possible choices ,
to the ones who like to explore things more than the average.
Happy 2009 !! -
Hi there, I bought a new hard drive to install in my Acer TravelMate 4280. I used the Factory default image DVD to install XP on the machine. It loads the RAMdisk and starts with the recovery. The C:\ drive is formatted and windows xp is decompressed.
But after this when the DVD is ejected and the system reboots on its own, it does not want to initialise. The monitor display a black screen with a flickering horizontal cursor.
Using an external mounting I have check the content of the drive and it seems as if all the system files is on it. Any ideas?! -
Your hard drive does not boot , because you have not install the ACER boot loader on your MBR ( master boot record)
Study again this thread .
Its advisable , to create C: and the D: partition .
Then to install the ACER software .
If you do not have the skills to repair the original ACER MBR , your other options are the third party boot loaders that I have present. -
Here is a interesting Tip , for advanced users ..
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=11476&page=35
I like to thanks Andrajos , this workaround ,
its the smartest advanced workaround ,
that some one had ever suggest !! -
Hi

i have same problem, i want try linux, but when i want remove it i can't use d2d recovery...but i have copy of pqservice on dvd and recovery dvd...i spend lot of time to make it function again...not working (d2d, recovery dvd)...so i completly formated hdd, with magic partition make 3 partition 1-pqservice 2-acer 3-no name all in fat 32....then in dos copy contents of dvd with pqservice and in magic partition set 1. partition to bootable ...reset... alt + f10...and wuala....it is working....but only one time.
so i have some question> why i can't find erecovery/empowering on pqservice or recovery dvd?
i download it from acer site but it wrote napp is old...
i find version 1.2.14.5 a make it function but only to make backup (d2d not work)
can (?):\mbrwrwin.exe install (?):\rtmbr.bin solve my problem?
i am so happy a have system back so i for some time didn't do any experiment with that
(very sorry for my grammar) -
ok use fix rtmbr and its working...completly with empowering erecovery but i don't know why? because i still cannot localize where is empowering instalation files. any idea?
