i have recently bought a MS Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1, and am using it with aspire 1683, i have noticed that after prolonged use (2-3 hrs, ok its not that long [ :)]) that the area around the usb port gets hot, on the 1683 the usb ports are near the fan (2.5inches away).

is this normal???... the mouse i am using is a full size mouse, not notebook one, does this make a difference???...

there is also a faint smell coming from the usb port???...

Does this mouse come with USB connector direcly or it uses ps/2 to usb adapter

Hey asthi check your CPU temparture and hardisk temparture at full load with mobile meter http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/release/0310/mm0310.zip

May be it's getting too hot there

When is your CPU Temp 47.O`c, running on 600MHz or 1.7Ghz

My Usb connector used to get hot..not as hot to produce smell. Looks like Your mouse draws huge amount of power...

Please try using the mouse with Front USB port and tell what happens

I just noticed that my pendrive and external 2.5HDD USB connector really gets hot..But i Have AC powerd external enclosure its connector does not get hot even if i leave on for 7 to 8 hours with continous activity.

So i guess if power is taken from the USB HUB it gets really hot. CPU is located towards the side panel .. and produces a huge amont of heat which is inturn transffered to mother board might be the reason the other usb ports getting too hot....anyways hav find a way to reduce heat

As for the mouse I'm using an USB mouse Conventional type with ball but it does not get to warm either , Try swapping mouse with non optical ( may be it draws less power )

BTW: Is your lcd brighness problem fixed Which bios verion are using ( It's displayed on the first page of Cmos setup - press F2 on startup)

57.0'c is the normal temparature for 1.86 at 533mhz bus speed , Infact i think its quite low . I would be really happy if it 57-63 is for peak cpu usage

Pentium M processors have heat tolerance upto 100'c (Much better than p4)
I have tried overclocking many dothan processors it runs at 85'c most of the time with out any problems

Please compare the few thing for me :
1)Did u find any improvements in Build quality compared to old one
2)Hows the new screen . Is there an improvement in viewing angles
3)Do u really feel the performance boost

I wonder if there is any improvement in folio design . I mean the flexing of the Lcd screen when we pick up as mentioned in this thread
