Anybody running Empowering Technology on an Extensa 5620 with XP?
I'm primarily interested in the ePower app. Screen is a little dim under XP, and the Intel Video app doesn't quite get it. I tried installing it, after installing Netframework 1.1 because Empowering Tech didn't understand that I had Netframework 2.0 installed. When I launch the ePower app all the selections are greyed out, so I can't adjust anything.

Does it not have brightness keys on the keyboard, like Fn + Left/Right?

Also the epower app is a load of rubbish, and probably designed for vista if the options are greyed out.

The Acer software are great , and it does offer great basic tools.

The bad are, that in one attempt of my to remove the preinstalled versions,
and replace them with newer versions i started to loose functions.

At the automated factory restore ( erecovery ) , i noticed that the Acer tools,
not only gets installed , but they get patched too ...

The funny are that Acer sites does not show any patches.

I had to activate erecovery again , just to restore the Acer software.

Thanks for the replies. The ePower download says it's for XP. Didn't notice those function keys, thanks for that tip. I'll try them out, right now I'm booted up in Vista.

i assume you installed all the other E-software after you installed the E-FRAMEWORK? and the DOT-NET 1.1 has to be installed prior to anything else!!

other than the convience of the E-recovery BACKUP options, i personally have no need for thier other software as windows control pannel allows you to do the exact same things (just not as conviently since network is in one place, power settings in another)

and IMO that HDD encryption is a bad idea since you must revome it before doing BIOS updates...

bigO hates BLOATWARE no matter how easy it can make things.... because you usually only need to set those options once (when using windows method of controlling them) then you can forget about them.... but using that E-Recovery you have bloat ware loaded all the time taking up system resources that can be better used by other things

I am getting out of topic ... because i can not accept the word bloatware .

    Acer services list :
    1) OSD display messages ... volume level - illumination level - On OFF Wifi ..
Question ? what windows software does that ????????????

    2) Acer launcher ..... all the control on your hands , plus hardware details.

    3) active Epower - managment , controlling everything at one click .
    Even CPU cycles ...

And all this cause a loss of 7-8 megs of ram ...

I can understand that the people with Celeron , has less interest about CPU cycles , as the Celeron does not do that .

Any way , i had say what i had in mind , and it does made me to feel better . :D

i repect your oppinion KIRIAKOST... i didn't include LAUNCH MANAGER (the onscreen display of the VOL +-, WIFI button status display) in my description because those are useful and not duplicated by windows anywhere...

and LAUNCH MANAGER is not a part of the EMPOWERING TECHNOLOGY..

and i agree with you to a point,,, it is a good idea, and a great way of having the most needed options available at the user's finger tips... it is especially useful for those not familuar with how to do those things inside windows.

but i think the ERECOVERY APP,, most useful for everyone,, could use a little redesign in it's GUI to make it easier for new owners to figure out how to burn RECOVERY CDs ( that little BURN DISC button is kinda vauge in it's actions and some new users afraid to click on a button like that not knowing what discs it will start burning... others have told me they assumed you clicked that disk after you chose your backup method,, and that the button looked like it was for beginning to make the BACKUP DISKS,, and they had no clue it was a second page of options to BURN RECOVERY DISKS,, if acer would add 1 word it would make it much easier to understand

sorry if i offended you or anyone, but you will find that as a general rule we are trying to get the most performance we can out of what we have. (most ACER owners are an intelligent bunch, and often some of us remove any extra software that doesn't suite us as individuals). i was not saying to uninstall it, as it has no use.... i was just pointing out that 80% or more of the E-TECH features are available thru the control pannel.

I ended up just removing all of it and using the light blue function keys, doh. I hate bloatware as well. Dualbooting and trying to keep the XP partition lean and mean.
