I've been looking for a ext battery for my Aspire 5002.
I've found a couple with the right electrical characteristic, (19v, 3.42A) but non of the devices list the Aspire 5000 as being compatible.
Does anyone know if there is a reason it's not compatible, or does anyone have an ext. battery that they're happy with.

Are you sure that it is even possible to use an external battery? I have never heard of those....could you provide a link to the external batteries in question?

There are several, here are a couple I've been looking at. They plug into the DC in jack where the AC power supply normally goes.

The first one should work. You just have to make sure that the center pin on the plug is positive. If it isn't you may have to rewire it.
I didn't see specs for the second one so can't say yes or no.
They are kind of pricey though. -

Well, I know you probably thought of this, but...why don't you just get a second main battery? That would be cheaper and easier to transport.

Chutsman:
The batteries come with multiple pins, so you can select the size and polarity that meets the need.

I did think of that, and haven't excluded it. External batteries have a greater capacity then a second main one. I usually get a couple of hours from my battery. These externals can easily go from 4-6 hours or more depending on the size and the demands of the laptop. The 90W is rated at 9.6Ah. The battery that comes with the 5002 is only rated at 4.4AH.
External Battery for an Acer 5002.
