I recently started my second year of university in the UK. I decided to take along my monitor from home (It's a Samsung flatscreen no bigger than a 15inch laptop screen) to dual screen whilst working on projects... so i'd be typing away on one screen and listening / viewing the Watchmen on the other!
However recently my laptop's been messing me around. I have a Acer Aspire 6920g Gemstone Blue (16inch Screen) edition, every time I turn on the power the laptop screen remains blank, there's no power even running to it. Instead the laptop believes the external monitor is it's main display and I HAVE to connect it otherwise my laptop is pretty much useless.
I have tried the solution of turning off the power, taking out both battery and power cord and holding down the power button for 20 seconds to release any unwanted voltage (then left it for a few hours while I slept) and awoke to it working as normal. This was only temporary as I have the same problem once again.
It all began when I was in a rush to go home and I just took out the VGA cable and dashed, could this be the cause?

I'd really appreciate any help you can give on this

N.B. I've tried to Fn + F5/6/7 (tried em all)

I have the same issue with my acer netbook. The only way I've been able to get around it is to:

    1) plug it back in to an external monitor.
    2) go to the graphics options. I do this by right clicking and selecting the graphic options > output to, but I'm not on my acer at the moment so I'm unsure of exactly what it is called. if this isn't an option for you, try going into your GPU settings.
I proceed to change the output options to the laptop monitor again.
I hope this works for you!
