Hey guys,
I've been trying to find my brother a budget gaming capable laptop and would like to know if there are any issues with these two. Reason I'm concerned is I've read a few "throttling" and "heating' issues by a couple people on these boards (especially the first link).
Both are very similar in specs:
1) Acer 13.3" Laptop, 2.2GHz Intel Core i3-2330M, 4GB RAM, 750GB HDD (AS3830TG-6415)
STAPLES | BUREAU EN GROS
2) Acer Aspire TimeLineX AS5830TG-6626, Notebook (Blue) - Intel Core i3-2330M (Dual-Core, 2.20GHz), 15.6" HD (1366x768) LED-backlit, 6GB RAM, 640GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 1GB, DVD-writer, Intel 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, Webcam, Intel WiDi 2.0, USB 3.0, Windows 7 Home Premium
Canada Computers | Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets | Acer Aspire TimeLineX AS5830TG-6626, Notebook (Blue) - Intel Core i3-2330M (Dual-Core, 2.20GHz), 15.6" HD (1366x768) LED-backlit, 6GB RAM, 640GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 1GB, DVD-writer, Intel 802
Anyways, if you could let me know if either models are a good buy, I'd appreciate it. I absolutely hate dealing with repair facilities and it's something we would both like to avoid![]()

There is one issue but a major one at that- both suffer from CPU throttling when both CPU and GPU are under load.
That's an issue 3830, 3830 and 5830 suffer from- you see most complaints coming from 3830 owners because it's the most popular unit.
I would strongly recommend you stay away from it. In most cases Acers are reasonably priced and offer goos value for money but not in this one. -
Seems that the next choice in this price bracket for my brother is the Asus K53SV (i5/540m) for 649$ through Canada Computers.
It's a shame that the 3830 has these issues, because it's a great bargain... oh well -
I don't know if it's available in Canada or how is or priced over there but HP Pavilon dv6 with HD6770 DDR5 might be worth a look if you like to play some games.
Where I live HP dv6 is some ~5-10% more expensive than Asus and Acers in question but is better equipped (BluRay drive, USB TV Tuner for free) and is faster in games thanks to its superior GPU.
Feedback on AS5830TG & AS3830TG-6415 models? Any issues with them?
