Does anyone have the Acer Ferrari 1000?

I would like to know a little bit about it.

I am considering it vs. the Asus W7J laptop.

I like that it has the new wireless-n, bluetooth, and weighs under 4 pounds.

Just want to hear from some people to know if the build quality is as good as all the Asus people claim theirs' is.

    Thanks

Looking at the specs I would go for the Asus (better CPU & better GPU + dedicated memory for the GPU).

A local magazine tested the Ferrari 1000 and got these initial results:

    PCMark05 = 3064
    SiSoft Sandra - Processor Arithmetic = 14,491
    SiSoft Sandra - Processor Multimedia = 37,617

...doesn't appear to be a powerhouse. The low PCMark score was probably due to its crappy GPU...

PS. It was comparing with the Ferrari 4000 and the Asus Lamborghini VX1:

    Ferrari 4000's PCMark05 was 2641
    Asus Lamborghini VX1's PCMark05 was 4052

From the respective specs, here's what I conclude:

    Asus
Going to produce more heat than the Acer due to the GPU
Better performance than the Acer due to the CPU

    Acer
    Less Heavy
    More Space on HDD

So portability-wise, Acer has the upper-hand, but Asus shouldn't be far behind. And for that form factor, having that much power is a big deal.

IMO, the Asus is the clear winner. The RAM shouldn't be much of a problem. And read the reviews for the Asus that are here on NBR. Just go to www.notebookreview.com/reviews and choose the Manufacturer and teh Model. The Ferrari review isn't up yet, so if you buy a ferrari, you could review that. The Asus review is up though.

    Thanks for the help.

The Asus seems pretty good. I really want to wait for merom, but that might be a long way out.

Like nicolin said, Merom = Core Duo w/ 64-bit. Runs with the same FSB as Core Duo (aka Yonah) so you can pop in a Core 2 Duo in a Core Duo slot (provided you have a BIOS update from the manufacturer). Core 2 Duo performs on teh same level, if not better than the Core Duo.

I see that you have a Radeon X1600. If it's 128MB of RAM, it's kinda bottlenecked, but you should be able to play games for a year at least. Also depends on what kind of games you want to play.

Edit: I found a review of the 1000 on TrustedReviews

Maybe you would want to check it out? :p

suraj, no offence but this is a thread about the Ferrari 1000.
And if you would have taken a little time to google about your laptop you would have found out that your video 'adapter' is :"ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1600 with up to 512 MB of HyperMemory™ (128 MB of dedicated GDDR2 VRAM, up to 384 MB of shared system memory)".
Hypermemory is taken from the system memory.
Btw, how exactly did you choose your laptop seeing that you dont really know what you've bought?

Best Buy has both Ferrari 5000 and 1000 here:

    http://www.bestbuybusiness.com/bbfb...tegoryIDs=600767/600783*&mfrName=Acer America

The rear of 1000 has a thickness of 1.4" and it weighs about 3.7 lbs. Not sure but I may wait till September unless Best Buy can put some on consumer store shelves to play with before then.

    Price of Ferrari 1000 = $1969.42

Note the Ferrari 1000 has an exterior firewire HD, as most of you probably know.
Guess I can forgive the thickness since it has 4 USB and a host of other ports many ultralight laptops do not have such as s-video, HDMI-19 pin, etc.

My only question is will it play Tomb Raider Legends better than my 1 year old Sony T250 with 64 MB shared memory which is playable at 640x480 by the way. I would have to download the playable TRL demo onto the Ferrari to find out.
