I wan't to buy the new Ferrari (5000) mainly because of the performance and looks. I have always owned a desktop with AMD processor, so heat is not a problem. I've heard that AMD processors run hot on laptops. Is this a big issue on the ferraris (3000 or 4000) or is it a very tolerable thing?

the acer ferrari 3000 gets pretty hot. Hot enough that you would feel unconfortable with your hand on the palm rest after running the computer heavily for a half hour or more. It's nice in the winter though. My palms were sweating constantly when using the 3000.
