Hey guys, firstly I wanted to say fantastic resources available on this forum. Its taught me a lot already (I always thought all laptops forced you to stick with the integrated parts)

I still have a few questions though.

I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card and I keep reading about people replacing a graphics card I don’t have. I assume that over time they released versions with different graphics cards, but according to the device manager I run an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series.

I'm looking at different cards, and I have an idea which would be a good upgrade but I have 2 questions.

    1) Which would you recommend as a good upgrade that doesn’t cost as much as a new laptop would do.
    2) I read about graphics cards needing an acer bios. What I need to do if my graphics card didn’t have this?

I have a good idea how I would install this card thanks to a link provided on this site, but I’m not 100% confident in the information I have. Is my graphics card the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series?

    Thanks in advance, retrot

Hi RetroT, and welcome to the forums!
You are correct in assuming that the 5920G came with a variety of different graphic cards over different geographies - one of the benefits of the MXM form factor.
A quick peek at the Acer MXM thread can provide some insight.
Your card is probably the ATi Mobility Radeon HD 3470. Run GPU-Z for more information.

As for the upgrade, you're lucky that the 5920G is one of the more popular - and thus upgraded - models on the site. Since the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT and 9500M GS were sold in configurations of the 5920G, those should be viewed as safe upgrades. If you're feeling daring, however, the ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4650 is acknowledged as one of the strongest cards that will fit in your machine (some crazy people have even shoehorned in an overclocked HD 4670!).

If your graphics cards needs an Acer vBIOS (possible if you're getting it from eBay), simply use vBIOS flashing tools such as nvflash or ATi Bios Editor to flash the right one onto the card; techPowerup has a large database of vBIOSes.
