    Hello all,

I've got a problem which is really pushing me to the limit

I've got a 320gb Seagate Freeagent Go external hard drive which I need to transfer data from onto my Acer 6920.

All starts well with transfer speeds of around 30mb/s, the speeds then drop to around 10mb/s and more often than not the whole transfer freezes and just hangs no matter what size file I'm transfering. I've got over 200gb I need transfered but it just won't do it, even in small chunks of data.

Am going to try it on XP in work but could it be a Vista problem and would updating my Intel Matrix Storage driver help???

    Thanks in advance

Hi, updating that driver will not help usb transfer speed as it is for hd storage. What you might try is any chipset update, also are you running SP1?

Thanks for the reply...I am running SP1 on Vista. Please excuse my ignorance but not sure what you mean by chipset. I've got the latest BIOS installed from Acer and the latest drivers that they list on their site for the 6920g.

Am currently using XP in work to transfer and no problems so far... Vista

Hi, if you've an Intel CPU, then it'll probably be an Intel chipset. Personally I've not experianced usb file transfer issues, however I've probably only used files up to about 30-40gb. SP1 was meant to fix slow files transfer issues so maybe there's something else going on that interfering with your transfer. Other than that I can only suggest is here http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...sta+slow+file+transfer+over+usb&btnG=Search&= and try out some of the solutions., or turn off any anti-virus software you might have..

Thanks for you fast response...I have downloaded the latest Intel Chipset Device software for my PM965 chip but haven't installed it yet from fear of making things worse.

Can I just update over the current one or would I need to uninstall first??

Generally is it a wise choice to update the Intel software to the most current from the Intel site or stick with the ones that Acer have on their site and that are currently installed??

Anyway, many thanks for the Google link, I'll have a look at that and hopefully establish what the problem may be.

    Cheers :)

A defrag solved it for me when I had a similar problem.

I'd suggest you re-format the external drive using NTFS (not FAT32). FAT32 can only support a maximum file size of 4GB (transfer speeds are also ridiculously slow).

Thanks for your responses...my c: drive was defragged 2 nights ago and the external drive was formatted in NTFS before I attempted to copy any data as I wanted to ensure the drive was as clean as possible.
