My Laptop has started to freeze when I open windows or sometimes before it gets to the windows stage. The only way to turn it of was remove the battery and power lead. Is there anything I can do to resolve this problem?

Try to boot pressing f8 at reboot so that you can enter to safe mode. Then you can try to restore your system to earlier time.

Thanks I will try this tonight and see if I can get the problem sorted. Would removing the battery when in windows cause any prolonged damage do you think? How would you know?

Sounds like you are having the same problem i am. plug in an external mouse, and boot up, see if that works, and, take the battery out, and boot up on wall power only w/o the external mouse.

Thanks I will try this also. I got it working last night enough to look through photos etc. So I thought I would run a system virus scan to see if it my be a virus. after a few minutes of the scan the Hard drive seemed to reset itself and started booting up again. So I left it a bit and tried the scan again. Done this a few times till the freezing started again. Does this sound like a virus or Hard Drive problem??

to check your hard drive
http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html
this should check for errors on your disk its quite easy to do just follow the instructions to the letter
if your running vista when you type cmd in the search bar right click the cmd icon in the search results and click "run as administrator" and cont as per instructions -
I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire 1694WLMi
It just freezes after a few minutes of work. I think it is not a software problem.
Safe mode does not help, I also checked the RAM and other components.
And I am pretty sure, that there is no problem with the temperature.
I had the problem a few months ago, but I solved it then by installing the OS without ACPI.
(Install your OS without ACPI.
Boot from the Windows CD. When there is written, that you can press F6 to install Raid drivers or so, press F5 (yes, F5,not F6). Then choose Standard PC and install Windows).
But now this problem appears again and I haven`t any solution for it. I think I will send my book to the Acer Service, but this might be very expensive, because the warranty is expired.
I hope I could help you
Sorry for my english, it`s not so well. I hope you are able to understand what I have written.

remove the battery and try to boot up using just the power supply.
