As standard it comes with a 1366x768 screen, but is it possible to upgrade it to a 1080p screen?

It's almost certainly a single LVDS notebook so full HD screen won't work.

Nope. I wouldn't say I'm 100% sure because there were several 15" notebooks Acer offered that had dual LVDS but these were few and far between and I haven checked 5742G personally to be 100% sure.
That said I'm 99% sure that's not possible as none of 15" notebooks of that generation were offered with HD screens and knowing that I'm pretty sure 5742G also uses a single LVDS.

I see, thats fair enough then I guess. I don't suppose you know if the CPU is upgradable in this laptop? I know the GPU isnt.

It is upgradeable indeed. You might find t his service manual useful if you are planning on upgrading the notebook.

I've checked the schematics and it seems that the lanes responsible for the higher res are cut. So even if you get a suitable (dual LVDS) cable it wont work.
