Give me reasons not to buy $1600 Predator 7 on Amazon

Many reviews online say that it is well built gaming laptop with very good keyboard and speakers(what I want exactly).

But, I don't see many recommendation on this one from NBR. why?

 

Nobody here will recommend BGA over replaceable components. When your GPU fails, which it will, you have to replace the whole motherboard or get it repaired by a specialist (which will cost almost as much in some cases). The CPUs on all these so called "gaming" laptops nowadays are throttling like hell due to poor cooling, poor quality VRMs and so on, At the very minimum all laptops will need a repaste, ideally you will want a modded BIOS so you can adjust the voltage etc. I'll give you the advice I give everyone else - spend your money on a good desktop instead. You will get way more performance, upgradability, much better cooling and you will end up paying less for it. If you want a true laptop that is worthy of the title "gaming" - you at the very minimum want something with an MXM GPU. Sadly since Broadwell there are no socketed mobile CPUs from Intel, but you can find laptops such as the Clevo P870 and MSI 16L13 which have proper LGA1151 sockets and desktop CPUs. Some of MSI's other models with MXM slots are also decent. Don't fool yourself though, these will still need work to get to an optimal running condition, but at least they are worth the effort and will last longer.

What kind of things do you plan on doing with your laptop? If you don't need masses of power I would suggest looking at some used laptops (providing they are in good order). Something like an old M17X R4 or an M18X R2 will still perform 90% as well as the BGA stuff you can buy nowadays, especially if they are fitted with a 1060 or 1070. Older Clevos can be worthwhile buys too (again dependant on condition).

1. I am not a hard gamer. Gaming wise, I use multi android emulator which requires goof RAM.

2. The reason why I am tryong to buy a laptop is my wife wants me to take less space.(Maybe I can ask her if I buy desktop lol) I don’t need portability.

3. Trying to avoid anything used with battery.
But, I can buy Certified Ref.

4. Using Photoshop, Vegas and Premire.
(Mostly photo editing tho)

5. Budget is $1500

6. I am a writer so I want decent keybord and display.

 

Have you considered a Mini-ITX PC? The cases you can get now are pretty small, and there are a lot of system builders who can do them for you. If you pick a small case i'd imagine you'd have a similar desk footprint to a large (17 inch) laptop.

I'm not familiar with US system builders to be honest as i live across the Atlantic, but OriginPC and iBuyPower come to mind. HIDEvolution also sell the MSI Trident I believe - I have no idea what they are like but it seems to be about the same size as a games console. I think Asus sell similar sized PCs, but i'm not sure what they are like either. Some others on the forum who are in the US might be able to give better advice. The only reservation with those MSI and Asus mini-desktops is i'm not sure how upgradeable they are.

You don't need to go too big. I think micro ATX is a good half way between mini-ITX and regular ATX. The kind of things you plan on doing would make me say AMD would be best - a Ryzen 5 1600 for 6 cores should help with editing and emulation (depending how well optimised it is for multiple cores) along with 16GB of RAM. You likely won't need a powerful GPU I take it, which is probably a good thing with the current prices. A 1060 at the most would be fine, though a lot of people seem to be happy with the 1050Ti depending on the kind of games they run.

If your wife decides you should have a laptop though, there will definitely be something suitable for you. Have a listen to the views of some other forum members on the matter.

 

I have an Acer predator 17" similar to the one you describe. I have not had one problem with it and highly recommend these units. As far as overheating...I haven't had any throttling problems (BF1, Quake, GTA...etc) but it was getting warmer than I liked at around 90c for the CPU. I simply use the Intel Extreme Tuning utility to undervolt the CPU slightly(Instructions on how to do this are found on the Acer Predator Forums on Acer site). This doesn't affect performance at all and keeps my cpu around 75c even during the longest and most intense gaming sessions with no repaste needed.
. THE GPU stays around 64c at all times. This thing has a great Monitor, great sound, great keyboard, runs quiet and built in monitor overclocks easily to 100hz( and beyond). It also allows me to run an external monitor with g-sync at 2560 x 1440 a 144hz no problem at all...

As an owner of the Acer I can't think of a single reason not to buy the unit you are inquiring about...If you want a desktop PC buy one but don't be discouraged about buying a Predator...they are awesome IMHO and I have owned dozens of laptops and gaming pc's over the years...built a lot too.

Yes I can honestly say it exceeded all of my expectations...and the fact I can pick it up and take it with me is a huge bonus to my lifestyle. For starters its running a 7th generation CPU when the new i7-8750h six core processor machines were announced last week and will be out this month... the only reason to buy a 7th gen now is if its REALLY CHEAP or if you absolutely need it now.
