I downgraded my laptop (Acer 5100-3372) from Vista to XP. I have nearly everything back up and running and performance much much better. The biggest problem I'm having is finding a compatible replacement driver for the high definition audio controller soundcard. I've gone to the Realtek site and tried several drivers without success. Any ideas or suggestion would be much appreciated. Thx.

Try Acer's website for the drivers, they have them all there for the 5100, even xp seeing as how originally the 5100 came with xp.
-
The Vista driver will more than likely work. Same goes for XP drivers in Vista...most work.
-
The acer website that adinu forgot to link you to is the acer euro site for the 5100 series located here
You can get all the XP drivers for your 5100 series there. -
I didn't forget to link it, I assumed the guy knew how to use the world wide web and how to type, which is all you need to access the Acer website and download the appropriate drivers
-
I tried the XP driver and also the Vista driver with no luck. One thing I've noticed is that the Vista driver is the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver while the XP driver is just listed as an audio driver. I've deleted and re-installed and still continue to get the dreaded yellow explamation point under my system devices (listed as Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio). Is there something obvious that I'm overlooking???

Ive just done the exact same thing on a 5102, what you need to do to get the audio (and most other things) working is to first install the chipset drivers from that link posted earlier. That should make most of the hardware detectable by XP ,then all you need to do is install the drivers.

In order to provide an answer to the original post, you do NOT use the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from Vista - it does NOT work. Instead, follow EVOLUTION's advice and go to the Acer Europe website, and download the XP driver (filename is "Audio_5_10_0_5273.zip") - it works perfectly.
But I actually have a related question of my own. I've also upgraded from Vista to XP, and am having trouble with the Orbicam. My system correctly detects the built-in webcam as a USB Video device, but functionality is severly limited by Windows "built in" picture taking software (wizard). There are several XP drivers for the webcam, but none of them install any type of interface where one can adjust settings or capture video, rendering the ordinarily adequate Orbicam a piece of junk not much better than a cel phone camera. Anyone had any experience or luck getting the Orbicam back up and running after swtiching back to XP?
Thanks in advance for any help. -
I'm looking for the exact same thing that "the real HLC" is looking for.
My camera works with Yahoo and other messengers but I have no software to use it to just take quick pictures with. No interface. Bummer. -
'the real HLC' and 'FuzzyBubba'
You guys must be wanting the 'Bison Bar' software for the cam right?
well let me see if i can find it somewhere on the internet.. if not, i will upload my copy for you guys, i am sure it will work. lemme see, k? -
Hey guys,
i found this link to a pdf. It links to the application drivers and software for the camera and other stuff. Check out which model your cams fall into and find the right one. Maybe like a trial and error method. But i am sure you will find it.

Interesting thing is that it has everything related to the Acer 5100 series.
Cheers.
Have fun. -
Thank you SO much.

thanks for posting the .pdf link (its actually where I got the drivers I used, though this should save anyone else contemplating this upgrade a heckuva lot of time!), though unfortunately the only XP-related OrbiCam utility is the Camera Driver v5.0.0.8c, which is NOT working, at least not like it should.
If you run the install file, it seems to do NOTHING - the webcam is still listed as USB 2.0 with generic Microsoft Driver under device manager, and the OrbiCam shortcut it puts on the desktop is dead. If you manually go into the Camera Driver v5.0.0.8c folder, there is a sample application called Microsoft LiveCam; you CAN open that, and if you select "USB Camera" from the dropdown it will allow you to capture video, though the interface is TERRIBLE and hard to control, much like taking pictures with the built-in Windows USB Video Device control is.
So, the problem isn't that the camera doesn't work (it does), but rather, how do we get back the OrbiCam functionality after making the switch back to XP? I have googled "BisonBar" and variations thereof extensively, and have not been able to find that software, so if you do have a copy, I'd be grateful to get my hands on it to see if it can provide a fix. Also, another thought is "manually" updating the driver in the device manager to the Bison one - how do I determine which file (in the Camera Driver v5.0.0.8c folder) to point it to?
I just want to say thanks again for taking the time to try and help provide a solution to our woes - I'm really grateful. -
Yeah. That's where I got all my other drivers from as well. There is no software for the camera just the drivers. Cam works on applications, but damn do I miss that software that was originally on here. If I can get my friend to find the install disk that came with this laptop, maybe it'll be on there and i'll post it up.

Oh my goodness, this thread just about saved my life! I was "downgrading" my Acer 5100 laptop form Win Vista to Xp and all the drivers I could find were not working. Thanks ath007 for that link!!

my orbicam don't work even after loading the bisoncam driver ?? the hardware / software/ drivers all say " working ok " , even in device manager etc ...but all I get is a greyed out screen in whatever application I try to use eg msn !!
even contacted acer .com ,tech dept.....they replied by use the recovery disc , failing that download the correct driver , and failing that " sorry, can't help you further " !!!! my young son could of told me that !!!!! -
its working !!!
I uninstalled the software and hardware ( usb2.0 cam ) and installed another bison driver ! then reinstalled cam hardware , which then found the driver fom the previous bison driver intall !
I had tried various combinations of installing, different drivers ( bison x3 , logitech, usb 2.0 ) and combinations ..but the above seemed to do the trick .
one that worked for me was the bison ccd_5_0_0_10f driver ,
now works on msn and photo/cam wizard etc -
It seems keeping an old thread alive isn't a problem in this forum, so if I'm wrong please forgive me! I have a 5100-5023 that I bought for my wife 15 months ago. She wanted to try Vista, and I got the Latitude D505. We both realize now that I got the better end of the deal (especially after swapping the Celeron for a P4 and adding a bigger HDD and more RAM).
She now wants the Dell back, or XP on the Acer.
Many thanks to all for paving the way, but I have one question before I start:
