And am I very happy, the specs from my supplier are as follow:

    AS1694WLMI-XPH CENT 1.87/1GB DDR2/100GB, Aspire 1694WLMi-XPH, Intel
    Centrino Mobile Tech 750 1.87GHz, 1GB RAM DDR2, 100 GB HD (4200RPM),
DVD-Dual (DL), 15.4 inch WXGA Acer Crystal Bright, ATI-X600 64MB,
    802.11b/g, Win XP Home

But to my surpise I get the following extras.

X700 ATi, Pentium M 760, and DL DVD with RAM support. Oh man I'm in love. And the dvd-rw is not QSI, it's a mat****a/panasonic drive. No extra cost and the same part number.

    Any questions?

Oh, great. Just when I thought I was set on my next notebook...!!!

Okay, so first it was the Fujitsu n3510 but the graphics card was not what I wanted. Then it was the Dell 9300, but it was a Dell. Then it was the Toshiba m40, but then... Then it was the ASUS Z71V, but WSXGA+ on the a 15.4" screen is way too high for me and my bad eyes. The 1694 sounds just about perfect (minus the bluetooth) for an awesome price.

Have you compared the screen to other glossy type screens (ie. crystalview, xbrite, etc)? And what's this 'other story' about how you could have got it $1846?!

Also, any comments on the things (other than screen and graphics) that I find most important: 'build quality' and noise/heat?

    Thanks

I can buy these things at cost from a computer whole seller, but I didn't have the cash. So a friend/client of mine wanted one also, so he order 2 via his company from a friend, his friend is a computer whole seller as well but marks the prices up a bit. Pissed me off a little but I didn't have the cash, well I do, but I didn't want to take 2k out of my account right now. My current cost is $1846 CDN, plus GST, I personally would sell one for about $1925+TAX, not a bad mark up. I checked again today and my whole seller still lists these with a 1.87 GHz CPU, 10/100 lan & x700 same part number. Must be getting the wrong specs from Acer.

    >Also, any comments on the things (other than screen and graphics) >that I find most important: 'build quality' and noise/heat?

I'm happy with everything but the lack of sata use, hdd and dvd share the same channel [ :(!] . Screen is on par with every other one I've seen, a little hard to see from some angles, perfect for normal use, dvd drive is nice, just ripped a movie as a test and burning it now. I expect the battery will last for at least 4-4.5 hours well programming/word processing/e-mail. Games and movies will drop down to about half I think. Keyboard is nice and has good space between the keys. Card reader works fine, wireless is intel 2200b/g and works perfectly. The signalup antenna thing works wonders. Laptop is light, feels like you could carry it around all day. Speakers suck, but I've yet to see an acer with good ones. Have not played any games yet, but dvd's play real nice on it. Over all quality is good, about zero noise, it's a little warm where the CPU heat sink is but I've be using the thing for about 10 hours, installed Linux, compiling kernel over and over (need to get everything working 100%), temperature is around 50c, the laptop is on a non-coated wood surface, so the heat is sticking with it. But it's lap friendly, no burnt penis like that guy in england.

I have almost the same specs than you for 1929$ CND. But I don't know the rotation speed of the HDD.

ACER Aspire 1694WLMi LX.A6505.031 in Québec Canada
    P-M 1.87
    1Go DDR 333 Mhz
    100 Go HDD
    15.4" WXGA screen
    ATI X600 64 Mo
and all other things like DVD, windows, wifi...

I'm afraid of buying a 4200 RPM hard drive. If it was 5400, I'll go buy it next week.

    Hey Danbrow,

    Congrats on your new notebook!

The issue with the HDD & DVDRW on the same channel seems to be a common thing on the new Pentium M notebooks based on the 915 chipset. Most manufacturers have opted to use PATA drives in a unit that fully supports SATA. But with the 915 chipset, it only has 1 PATA IDE channel & 2 SATA channels. This is the exact same problem I have on my HP Compaq nx8220 I got recently.

I have another question for you.

There are 3 audio ports on the front of the 1694. One for line-out, one for mic-in. What is the other ?

Ya my specs where suppose to be like the ones you have but I got a lot more, read my first post.

The third audio port is headphones. The hard drive is 4200RPM, I would have upgraded but I'm waiting for hitachi to release their 100GB 7200 RPM drive with 8MB cache. I'm just going put the old one into an external hard drive. It's still a very fast laptop with the crappy 4200rpm drive, and you get what you pay for. After looking around I would have got a whole let less if I would have went with tosiba or hp, every laptop in futureshop, staples & best buy had half the RAM, 60-80GB hard drives and I think they where 4200 RPM drives in some. They also didn't have PCIe graphics & most had the 855 chipset. This laptop is top of the line, or more bleeding edge. A week ago I went back to futureshop to see if the laptops had something else with them that could justify the $2200-2500 price tags, only 1 had an WUXGA lcd, which made me very happy about my purchase. I paid about $2300 CDN after tax (pst&gst) with a 3 year warranty for mine. My next laptop will be an acer, probably late next year when they have dual-core centrino laptops with 2 GB of ram. I only wish acer sold 12 cell battaries which would give like 6-7 hours of wireless heaven.

Can you tell me when Hitachi will release their 100 Go 7200 RPM 8Mo cache hard drive ?

I will already have a 120 Go 3.5" 7200 RPM drive in an USB2.0 enclosure. Do you think that a 120 Go 7200 RPM and a 100 Go 4200 RPM will perform similar due to the limitation in bandwith of USB2.0 ? If yes, I will probably do like you and upgrade for the 100 Go 7200 from Hitachi, put the 4200 in a case ans sell my 120 Go 3.5".

Thank you for your replies. You're helped me a lot !

Should be soon they've got them listed on their site, the model/series is E7K100, it's the 2nd gen 7200rpm drives so it should be damn fast. I tried to get a price on them today but my supplier can't find one yet.

After searching google it looks as if the e7k100 is for blade servers, where the 7K100 series is for normal everyday use and is shipping now.

I am considering these two models (Dell 9300 and ACER 1694).

    For a similar price of the ACER, I can have a Dell 9300, 17" screen(1152*864 crappy resolution for a 17" wide), 1 Go DDR2 533, X300 128 Mo and a 80 Go 5400 RPM HDD.

But if I upgrade the screen to have one that support higher resolutions (at least 1280 * 800) and the graphic card to have a NVidia GoForce 6800 256 Mo, the price of the Dell is quickly goes up.

The best quality/price ratio is the ACER 1694 for sure. But if you have some extra dollars and want a gaming notebook, go for the Dell. With the ACER 1694, you can do a little gaming but it is not the best machine to do that. The ACER 8104 is better than the 1694 for gaming.

On the dell.ca website, if I configure the Dell 9300, I have the following options :
    - Écran large 17po UltraSharp™ affichage XGA+
    - Écran large 17po True Life™ UXGA [ajouter 200 $ ou 5 $/mois]

And if I read the definitions of XGA+ and UXGA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_resolution) it said that it is XGA+(1152×864 (4:3)) and UXGA(1600×1200 (4:3))

[EDIT] If I understand what you say, I must add a "W" before these resolutions. It do the big difference ! But I have heard that many people have screen problems with 9300. Is it true ?

Yesterday, when I find the truth about the Dell 9300 screen resolution, my mind changed for it.

    I've just ordered the Dell 9300 (P-M 1.86 Ghz, 533 bus, 512 Mo DDR2 533 (2x256), 17" widescreen WXGA+ (1440*900), x300 128 Mo, Double-layer DVD±RW, 60 Go 7200 RPM hard drive, 9 cell battery, wifi a/b/g and 3 years warranty by phone + complete care(for accidents))

The whole thing cost 2099$ CND + taxes = 2414$ CND

I plan to buy 2x512 Mo of Corsair Value DDR2 533 for 190$ CND + taxes
A hard drive enclosure for my 7200 RPM 120 Go 3.5" and some external USB2 peripherics (sound card, tv-tuner, mouse, keyboard)
