Well, I got my 1681 from Newegg a few days ago, overall I am very happy with this computer. It is awesome for the price. Here are my thought:
First thing I noticed when I took it out of the box is that it is a nice looking machine. Silver and black, thin, and nice to look at.
The machine is pretty light, probably about 6 pounds with the battery.
The screen is awesome, very vivid and no dead pixels, nice widescreen XGA.
The hard drive is partitioned with FAT32, and it was easily converted to NTFS with help from people on this board.
Comes with XP home. The software included is actually pretty good, Norton, NTI CD/DVD maker, Acer Arcade (fairly useful video player), and something called "Power producer", which I am not sure what it is for, and if it is useful or not.
The batter life is about 2-2.5 hours for simple tasks. The DVD drive sometimes does not pick up when I the disc in, at which point I have to eject and push in the drive again. Minor issue really.
Wireless works great. Touch pad is a little too sensitive sometimes. The speakers are REALLY weak, and yes seems Mono to me.
Overall, I am very happy with the machine and the specs for the price, got it on Newegg for less than $1300. Good deal.

u got the US version?

Congratulations on your new unit! [

1. Power Producer, I believe, is software to create/edit videos, possibly to make your own DVD's.
2. The issue with the disc not being detected may be an issue with the drive, if it continues you may want to get it checked out/replaced.
3. The speakers may seem mono because they're really close together, makes it difficult to distinguish between stereo & mono
4. Regarding the battery life, you may be able to get a 4501 battery (8 cell) for this unit. The batteries should be the same size and swappable since the casing designs between the 2 units are identical.

congrats radman!
I am also considering ordering the 1681 from newegg.com.. I am getting it for $1322, with overnight delivery.
Plz tell me the configuration of your order. I am not too comfortable ordering online, so I'm going to call them up and give my payment details then. I hope it's fine with them!
How would you rate your experience with newegg.com?
again, cheers mate, you got a great machine here! -
I would not hesitate to order from NewEgg. I purchased on-line, got my computer in about 4 days (because I ordered on the weekend) via FedEX. No problems with the machine, no dead pixels. My DVD drive problem seems to have resolved.
Overall, I am very happy with the machine. Really a good deal for the money.
It may not be the sturdiest machine out there, but I do not move it around too much. -
oh and how is the sound quality?
is it really mono? -
