Ok so I recently rented Transformers on HD DVD from Netflix and basically the HD DVD will not read. I put it in and it just keep attempting to read it...and this goes on for like 5 minutes and still the HD DVD drive won't recognize it. (No error messages or "disk not readable" messages pops up either though) I've tried cleaning the disk, cleaning the drive even tried sending the HD DVD back for a new one. I've tried updating firmware, software, driver...etc. No luck. Anyone have an idea how to fix this?
Spec:
Acer 5920G
Toshiba DVDW/ HD TS-L802A ATA Device
Intel Core 2 Duo T5250
256MB GeForce 8600m GT
Update: After 10 minutes of reading...it reads it as a blank disk

what playback software do you use? Arcade Deluxe? But it does not matter as I've tried all possible programmes and none of them worked. Even AnyDVD can't decrypt it. My PowerDVDUltra with all updates can't play it. Some people had luck with it but not me.
-
OK, I've got it. Install AnyDVD 6.1.9.0 beta and run it in the background. I use
Power DVD Ultra with the latest patch. Disable virus checker -
Were you able to get your drive to start reading disk? I have the same computer as you and mine is doing the exact same thing. I have done a recovery 3 times and still the same prob. My sys. reads it as an HD drive but will not play HD disk. Mine will read and play reg. dvds, will yours?

Yea...mine plays everything except the HD DVD, it won't read...it won't even show up as something. But I've tried another HD DVD a couple weeks ago though and got it to work (World Trade Center) but this new (no straches) Transformers HD DVD won't even read...I'm trying out the AnyDVD and seeing it that will work -
I trid it with Anydvd and it would not work. The funny thing with mine is this just started today when I did the recovery to orig.

Well the AnyDVD thing didn't work...and mine stopped working also after like yesterday -

No luck at all -
Called Acer today, they were also stumped. I have to send mine in so they can try a new drive. Did you get yours to work? And also did this happen to you on Thursday or Friday?
-

Yea...it stopped working on Thursday!
Keep me posted on what happens...I can't send in my laptop at the moment (kinda need it) but tell me what happens so I can figure out if I'll need to send mine in too -
I have same problem here.. bump this thread to find out some help.

Acer HD-DVD time bombed ?

lol maybe? But only the reading HD DVD part....DVDs and CDs still work >.> -
I have external HD-DVD/Blu-RAY Combo driver & it works fine .
BTW I'm use WinDVD8(HD-DVD) & NERO Showtime(blu-ray) to watch the movies + AnyDVD-HD Decrypt -
I watched Transformers again yestarday with Arcade Deluxe and Power DVD - no probs. Make sure you use the latest version of the AnyDVD-HD (not lower than AnyDVD-HD 6.1.9.0). Earliar versions don't support Transformers. My 5920 did not come with the HD drive - I upgraded it myself. It did recognise HD DVDs straight away but I could not playback the latest stuff. I've updated the drive's firmware but it did not help. Any DVD resolved all issues!

I have a Toshiba Qosmio G30 194 with this drive built in.
Mine is doing the same than describe above. I was watching a DVD HD movie and then suddenly it stopped working and after that it never worked again. I am using the Toshiba DVD HD viewer to watch the HD movies.
Normal DVD's and CD's are working fine though.
It take about 10 minutes and then it told you the DVD is defective. I've tried it with several DVD HD and the same happens.
I've dual booted my notebook with Suse Linux and the same happens on the Linux side.
The drive just spins for about ten minutes and it then tells you the DVD is defective.
I will take this thread to my supplier and ask them to take it up with Toshiba.
Thank you

Did they figure out what was wrong with it? And you just send back the drive? How did u get it out? -
On the bottom of the laptop there is a screw where the back of the drive would be right in the middle. Once that screw is out the drive pops out when you pull on it. They could not find out what was wroung when I called tech support so the had me send mine in and sent me another one.
