I am thinking about getting the Acer TravelMate 2502LM ( Link). It comes with a 40gig 4200rpm HDD, and I would like to replace it with a 60gig 5400rpm HDD. I have been looking at the Newegg site ( Newegg Notebook HDD's)and have seen some good prices, but I am not sure about compatability issues. I do not now much about IDE, ATA 5, ATA 6, ATA 100, etc. I need advice as to what drive would be compatible.

    Thanks

P.S. I also am not sure how to install a new HDD. Will the notebook come with some sort of disc. Do I reinstall the OS? How? Do I need to create a disc? How?

I would advise against the upgrade if you're looking for speed. If you need storage that's another issue.

I would be doing it for speed and storage.

I thought I had read somewhere that the 5400rpm speed gives a decent performance increase over the 4200rpm speed.

The question still remains, what HDD is compatibe, and how do I install it?

Then I think you should go with the 7200 RPM drive. To upgrade the drive you just need to remove the old one and replace with the new. Your manual will show where it's located, usually it's removed with a single screw. Most notebooks support 2.5" drives which are compact IDE.

Look at the Hitachi drives here:

Well yes you just install it but you will not be done because you will have an entirely blank drive you will have to reinstall the OS and all of your files. So you will need to make sure you back up everything from the old HD first.
