i did a test in HDtune and i found something strange :

    ide mode : burst speed - 120mb/s
    cpu usage : 6,7 %

    AHCI mode : burst speed - 68mb/s
    cpu usage : 21% ( no mistake )

is this normal ? Hard disk is WD scorpio black 320gb

in HDtune i see that my hdd is set to ide - 100mb/s instead of sata

also when i connect a usb device ( after 3 connects especially) i get a BSOD and the error 0x0000008E .

I never got this error before and it all started 1 month ago, out of the blue.

Do you guys know how to fix these tings ?

In order to understand where the problem might be and to offer support, it might be an Idea to give us some more metrics on your system and OS Build etc.. :)

sorry about that, i was doing some research on the internet and forgot

    acer aspire 6920g , t5550, 9500m gs, intel pm965 chipset, ich8m, 3Gb of ram and wd 3200bekt.

if i install intel matrix storage manager ( which installs a new AHCI driver ) i notice that the burst speed jumps to 108mb/s and the cpu utilization drops to 4,7% ( from 20 and something ) but hdtune won't show anything in the health tab and also in device manager in the IDE/ATAPI Controllers all 5 Ide Channel tabs will disappear and i will only the ich8m controller and the ahci one.

Which OS are u talking about... XP SP2,XP SP3, Vista SP1, Vista SP2, Win7 7100, Win 7 RTM (MSDN/Technet) or some kind of frankenbuilt ?

    Also which version of Intel...

Mate you actually need to tell us what you have...

and whats wrong with that ?

In your original post you said ...

    "AHCI mode : burst speed - 68mb/s
    cpu usage : 21% ( no mistake )"

surely these new results are better ? or am I missing something ?

    it's vista 32 bit SP2 ( xp doesn't oficially support AHCI ) , intel matrix storage driver from 7/17/2009

yes after i install intel matrix storage performance does improve BUT i cannot see my HDD in device manager AND also i cannot the 5 SATA controllers i usually see there under the IDE/ATAPI controllers AND also in hdtune i cannot see anything under the health or info tab ( i already reinstalled it twice) - i already said this

what about the 0x0000008E error ? do you know anything about that ? it happens after i consecutively plug 3 usb devices in any usb port
