    Greetings all.

I have a problem with my Acer Aspire 1681wlmi, which I have had for 6 months...
The CD/DVD Drive doesn't work. I can't eject/open the disc tray, and the E drive does not even feature in 'My Computer'. The disc that is in there can not be read. When I press the eject button, the orange LED comes on and the disc tray whirrs a little, but doesn't open.

    I tried a system restore - didn't work.

    1. Has anyone else had this problem - if so, what happened
    2. I emailed Acer and they just told me to send it in, I really can't afford to with the amount of work I am doing on it at the moment

So, it would be very, very much appreciated if any of you guys could help me out!!

Does it have a tiny hole near the eject button? If so, have you try sticking a pin (or unbend a paperclip) in it? That should force a eject.

I'll try the pin in hole thing later, is that a long term solution??

Follow the other thread on removing the CD then re install it and see if it's a loose connection. Otherwise it may be a defective drive which needs to be replaced.

Don't worry, if you don't know what "flashing" means.. it means you didn't do it.. LOL [ :D]

OHP is talking about flashing the BIOS. Sometimes when you want to update your BIOS, you can download a software to "flash" (or update) your BIOS. Why would you do that??.. Lots of reasons, but in your case (brand new laptop) I don't think you were in need of a BIOS update.

    Woodie,

As others have indicated, it does seem to be a firmware/compatibility problem. My brother had something similar for a brand new DVD/RW drive he bought for his notebook. After plugging it in for the first time, it wasn't recognized, plus it gave an IDE error during power-on. It turned out to be that the drive's firmware was set for the wrong IDE setting (Master/Slave). It required a load of the correct firmware for it to work properly. He was lucky as the drive just happened to be detected after a whole bunch of restarts.

If this unit is still under warranty, I'd recommend sending the unit in for service and get the drive replaced.

What OHP seems to be suggesting is upgrading of CD/DVD rom firmware
For this first you have to identify model of you Drive, then check if any firware update is available
