I just purchased a Acer TravelMate Timeline TM8471-6306. This thing is having wireless issues.

The first thing I did was format the machine and installed Ubuntu. Everything went well until I attempted to connect the machine to my wireless access point. It would not connect. I know I was putting in the right WPA key. I thought it was a Ubuntu issue.

I took the laptop into my office where my wireless is located. The laptop connected to the access point and I was on the internet. I went to the other side of the room, wireless dropped. I figured it was a Ubuntu issue so I reinstalled Windows 7. Same issue. The wireless signal dropped when I am more than 5ft from the access point.

I called Acer support which is terrible beyond belief. They were telling me to call my ISP and my router manufacturer for support. I just hung up on them.

I believe this is a hardware issue because I have 3 other laptops in the house and they all work perfectly from the same access point all other the house. Only the acer has issues.

Before I pack this thing up and ship back, I was going to check with you guys for some suggestions.

Thanks, any help is much appreciated. The bios is 1.27 and the 1.34 did not mention it addressed any other the wireless issues I am experiencing.

Can you open up the base and check the antenna are connected correctly?
Main should be White and Black should be auxiliary.

I hate to do that since I just received it yesterday. Can you give me some instructions on taking off the base.

Just unscrew it you should be able to spot the wireless card.

You can also try, resetting the BIOS to the factory defaults (unplugging/disconnecting the BIOS battery for 20sec) or just re-flashing it, if you don't wanna open the system.

I attempted to open the base but I stopped in fear of voiding the warranty. I took out a few screws but never opened it. If you can send me a manual or pictures that could assist me, I would feel more comfortable.

Not sure why resetting the Bios would help this issue but tried it anyway to see what happened. Unplugged the battery for about 30 sec. Wireless still only works if I am next to the access point.

    Any other suggestions.

    Thanks for your help.
