the lappy starts to serve me since 01 nov 2004, been up for 24 hours BT downloading and nvr let me down, below is the spec

    Acer TravelMate 2303LCi
    Celeron M 1.5Ghz L2 512k (Banias Core)
    Intel i852GM Chipset
Intel Extreme Graphic 2 (Shared up to 64MB)
    256MB + 512MB DDR333
    80GB Samsung 5400RPM 8MB PATA

yesterday a vertical bar starts to appear, screen can be viewed as usual, but the color across the bar is softer, watever pic or text appears in the bar, the contrast goes lower

i restart the lappy and the bar still there, so i guess it's either the LCD or internal parts fails to operate..

i dismantle the laptop and thought of cleaning and reassemble the internal parts might help, but it doesnt

question: how to test whether it's LCD or internal parts problem? Any steps tht i miss out before sending it to repair?

If you have an external monitor, then connect it to that, and it should tell you if the problem is the grapics, or possibly the motherboard, or whether it is the actual LCD display in the notebook. If it is the graphics, then you will have to replace the motherboard, as you have integrated graphics. That will be expensive, and it is often worth considering a new notebook. Hope this helps.

Thanks Zero, i just hooked it w an external monitor, and it works like charm

can we conclude tht it's the LCD fault? ya i'll try to repair it myself, possibly twist the inner part of LCD wires :D

It sounds a bad LCD inverter or back light. It could also be a problem with the ribbon cable connecting th LCD to the daughter board. If you open the LCD bezel make sure all cables are tight and locked. Just be sure to watch out for the power portions as they can package a high voltage and amperage.

    thanks Kas for prompt reply

i reconnect all the LCD back inverter cables but no luck, the bar came out after a long pause yesterday where i usually turned off my LCD while the laptop is downloading, so i doubt it was the back panel or the circuit of the LCD fails

fuss now i'm either replacing the LCD, or used it w an external monitor, it's an LG-Philips LCD panel afterall (avoid LG/ Philips LCD next round)

    Conclusion:

Acer SuperCare extended warranty for extra 2 years is worth, acer laptop seems to be designed for app 2 years, i was wrong on the tht day where i don't buy the package which i thought it's a waste.

however, if u r planning to upgrade ur notebook once every 2 years, u may skip it and it's a good reason for u to upgrade it :D
