I have an Acer Aspire 3503WLC.
The harddisk is a Samsung MP0402H.

The harddisk falls asleep constantly. Like in one seccond. I can hear it spinning up all the time and there's a litte lag while it spins up.

Is it possible to change the setting somewhere, so it doesn't do that?

I don't care about saving power, since the batterylife of this laptop is too poor anyways for any usage. I just want the lag and sound to go away.

Yes - you can change when the hard drive goes off.

Control Panel > Power Options > then change "Turn Off Hard Disks" to "Never" for both battery and when plugged in.

Let me know if that helps.

Have you tried doing a BIOS update yet? Download and flash the latest one from Acer's support website - they usually fix hardware issues.

Let me know how everything turns out. ;)

I'd try giving Acer a call and see what they say. Be sure to post what they say. ;)

Just found this old thread now, and thought I'd follow up on it.

I contacted Acer a couple of times, but they had no solution.

I also have to correct that it's not every seccond it spins down, but about every 10 secconds.

I never found a solution, but found several people on the internet with the same computer and the exact same problem and they have never solved it either.

I don't know if it's the computers problem, possibly a bios thing, although I do have the newest version, or if it's the harddisk itself. Perhaps there is a way to set some settings in the harddisk. I don't know.

So now I am wondering if anyone knows a method for force a harddisk to never spin down?

I have the same problem with my 5002. I was messing around with nhc and its hard disk contoller, and theres a section that u set how much power the HD will use. At 1 the HD will spin down every couple of seconds. If u take that to over 128 the thing says (without spindown) but it still does, but not as often. If i set it anywhere over 170 or so the problem seems to have gone away.

Tho the thing is that the heat will also go up on ur hd. When I put it over the stock 128, the temps went up a couple degrees. Nothing to worry about still, but at least I dont have the spindowns all the time.

Yeah it's a big isue to me, since it does it while I am working on it. Not while being idle, but while working with apps. And everytime it does it, the computer hangs for a sec while the HD spins up and it is also quite annoying to listen to that spinning up sound all the time.

However the computer doesn't seem to do it as often anymore. In periods it will do it, but a lot of the time now, there is no problem. I have no idea what has changed.

I did mess around with that too, but didnt think it helped. But that might have helped afterall, since I now notice that it is not doing it as often, and the setting now it 128. So that might actually work. Thanks.

Try 254 or 192 in NHC Hard disk advanced power management.
