Hi, I have had a breakthrough in my laptop experience. I actually opened it up.

I followed the manual and no problems as of yet.

My question is the point in me opening up my laptop was to find the motherboard make and model and revision version number. I was checking to see if there was a bios update for this laptop and the advice given was to get the exact motherboard make etc..

and the best advice on how to get an exact match was to open it up. I did and I searched as far as my cheap tools would let me. I was able to remove the cpu fan but when I went to remove the cpu heatsink I could not get the screws to budge. According to the manual the cpu is beneath the cpu heat sink and this is where I thought I needed to go to find the motherboard make and model etc...

I just don't know what I am looking for or where to look for it. .. :(

    Help :)

the latest bios for the 5100's is version 3.13

the bios update is one acers website, and bios updates are available by model number, not mainboard versions.

Thank You Meaker. I had downloaded the bios version from this site. I am now trying to see if I can find more information on what this bios update includes and if it will solve my computer problems.

    Thanks Again

acer does not make their own mainboards. Acer uses ODM's (e.g. Foxconn, Inventec, Hannstar, Quanta, Arima, etc.) to make their products. You may consider any Wistron board an Acer board, as Wistron used to be Acer's manufacturing division before it got spun off.

Also, no this is not Acer fooling or tricking anyone. All major OEM's use ODM's.

    Thank you techiediva,

I have another question: Do you know any resources on how to find out what changes are in the Acer 5100-5674 v3.13 bios update. I unzipped the acer 3.13 version and there was no information on what is in this bios update.

In other words ,Am I safe using this update? Is it then assumed that any acer 5100 model is safe using this bios version?

    what do you think?
    (help) :)

    thank you,
