    Hi

Owner of an Acer Aspire 8930g.

I have successfully upgraded my CPU from a P8400(2.26) to a T9600 (2.8) so was reading through the MXM compatability thread and decided to pull my 9600m GT out just to double check which version it is, so I shut down the machine, removed the back and unscrewed the card, popped it out, comfirmed its the MXM-II type, reseated and rescrewed it back together.

Now I get a blank screen, external monitors dont work either.

I realised I forgot to remove the battery when removing the card, although machine was shut down.

I left it running for a bit with the back still off, felt the CPU and its hot as you would expect but the GPU was cold!

Looks like i've killed the card by shorting something probably, nightmare!

Looking on ebay they are running around £150 for a new one, what a costly few minutes i've just had.

Are you certain that the MXM card is all the way into the slot?
Try removing all power sources, depressing the power button and holding for 15 seconds, then booting the system back up again.

    Hi

Yes did that, card clicked into place and screw holes match up to secure it, removed all power sources, removed memory, wifi card, everything I can think of! Surely it might be something silly but as the card isnt even getting warm I think it could well be dead.

Have you tried reseating the CPU? Put back the old CPU to see what happens?

I've done something as silly as not seating the RAM all the way, too.

Sorry to say I killed a 9600m GT in exactly the same way. Took it out to fit some thermal pads for the memory chips as I didn't do that when originally fitted the 9600m, well forgot to pull the battery before starting and killed that card, it gives me nothing but rainbow lines when the machine powers up - no amount of reseating brought it back from the dead - fryed.

Since got a replacement and that is 100% so pulling the GPU while the battery is in can definatly kill it.

£122 inc postage from Germany to the UK. It was a used C1 core, seems good though. I know you can get C1 cores brand new (allegedly) from the east on ebay as well for a little more at around £150.

Ok thanks for the info mate. Are C1 cores newer versions that run cooler or just a model number?

Yeah C1 is the latest core revision, built on a smaller fabrication, 55nm instead of 65nm - basically means the core is around 10.5mm2 instead of 14.4mm2.

They do run alot cooler, before with an undervolted A1 core (0.89v) and ambient room temp of 14c, I was getting 74c full load with the core overclocked to 650mhz, now at stock voltage (1.05v) this C1 core runs cooler at 72c but with clocks upto a core speed of 700mhz.

This C1 core really didn't like having its voltage dropped though, at 0.89v it didn't even want to hit 600mhz, seems like the current draw is lower or something...

Sounds good thanks again for the info. I'll keep a lookout for a C1 then! :)
