Hi. I am looking to purchase an Acer notebook from CDW.com, which offers shipment internationally into Canada. The sales rep. there said that I would be responsible for any hold-off at the Canadian customs. I am wondering whether anyone have tried shipping a notebook from U.S. online vendors and have it shipped to Canada (using UPS or FedEX). Did you have to pay any extra duty or customs apart from the Canadian sales tax? If so, to whom do you pay the tax to? Thank you for any response!

Any taxes or customs charges/duties will all be covered by the receiver, unless the seller decides to pay for it (rare). There have been talk about shipping notebooks from the US to Canada in this forum. Users wanted to get in on a deal for the Acer Asprie 2012WLMi. Others have checked and said that you mainly have to pay for the taxes, but don't quote me on that. Try searching in this section for 2012WLMi and I think you may find the thread I was talking about. Should be fairly recent, within a couple weeks.

Yes,
the buyer is responsible for any duties and taxes. Depending on whcih area of Canada you live it can add an extra %15 to %20 to the purchase price. The best thing to do is call canadian customs and ask them.

Why don't you order it from a Canadian store? That's what I did, and I don't have to worry about that stuff. Of course you will have to pay GST and PST on it....

Well, update on my topic.
1) I phoned the Canadian customs and there are no duty on all computer-related products. Only have to pay 15% tax in Ontario.
2) CDW.com is a good company. I think they are trust-worthy. All the sales rep. were relatively nice.
3) However, I didn't buy from them in the end, but settled for a cheaper model, which I got in Canada for $1900Can, or $1450U.S -- the ACER Aspire 2012WLCi, which only has 40GB hdd and integrated video cards (sad).
Anyway, for anybody looking for a good deal on laptop, I think the new Aspire 1680WLMi is a very good deal. Saw it the day I bought it. I think it even have bluetooth on it too, but don't quote me on it.
Anyway, very happy because finally I got a laptop that is not obsolete ^^ I wait to hear from owners of both 2012 WLMi and WLCl -
Contrats, lucky. Where did you end up buying from?

I live in Toronto, and I bought it from a store at Pacific Mall called Notebook Outlet. My sales rep. was very nice, but not all of them are. Anyway, right now, although I am very very happy with my 2012WLCi, I am wondering about the new Folio design and what advantages it offer. Can't wait to learn more about it.

And do u recomend buying from them. I live in mississauga so i really don't want to have to drive there unless i plan on leaving with something. Also what is a Folio design?

Their service is ok. Good but I can't say for sure, since they would probably tell you to contact Acer for repair. However, Acer is pretty good in service, although only 1 year.
However, I would definitely suggest you to buy the Acer TravelMate 4501WlMi instead of the 1681WLMi because of the longer battery life. It makes a big difference. Anyway, hope my reply is not too late! -
Back to the orgininal topic: when ordering from the US for shipment into Canada, what are the expereinces with international warranties and chances to get service?
Can this be compared at all to the extended warranties that BestBuy, Stabples etc. offer in Canada. -
