    Hello everyone.

I want to buy an Acer Aspire AS 5100 5033 laptop. It would be perfect if it didn't come with Vista Home Premium in it. (Is it just me or is it impossible to find anything with XP in it...) I want it replaced with a full version of XP.

Has anyone had this done on a 5100 5033? How did it go? I'm concerned that in the end it won't come out intact and fully functional~a driver can't be found or something like that, after spending more than half of what the laptop itself costs just to get the XP in it.

I know little about computers and just wanna make sure I know what I'm doing before I buy everything and hand it all over to a tech.

    Thanks.

What's wrong with Vista exactly? What problems are you having? Maybe we can help.

The XP drivers should be available on the Acer website.

You won't get any issues switching back and forth between XP and vista on the aspire 5100 series. You see when the 5100 came out last year XP was the only OS available but now that vista has launched it has replaced XP but acer provides drivers for both versions of windows on their support website.

For this reason alone you will not get any issues putting XP on a 5100 however unlike you I went from XP MCE (that came with my notebook) to vista ultimate and I haven't looked back.

Vista isn't that bad try it and see if you like it first before going to XP.

Not a bad idea. I bought a 3680 (with Vista Home Basic) ,for the wife, with all intentions of removing vista in favor of xp pro. So far vista is doing everything she needs, just fine. So as evolution said, give a try, you may like it. You can always change it later.

    & Thanks!

I've just heard bad things about Vista and am already familiar with XP. But yes, I'll give it a try.

I heard a lot of bad stuff about vista too, but when I started to use it I have had no issues at all, and now I would not buy a computer that did not have vista.

Note: at least a 120gb hdd and 2 gb ram is strongly recommended

Yeah... I believe back then most laptop don't have the hardware to allow Vista to run smoothly.

I've found a few things about Vista that needed work.

    Specifically:
    • I turned off UAC
    • Windows Firewall has no easy way to set outbound connection blocking
    • I did the "Run As Administrator" for some programs
    • WMDC just plain sucks
Other than those, Vista is fine. See my webpage on PC Security under the PDA section for more details.

    Hey,

Just read your "switching back" thread a while ago.

Anyway, I too have numerous problems with sucky WMDC. OneNote just won't sync... Any idea?

None. And neither did Microsoft; no help at all.

    I'm considering two options:
    • Installing XP on another machine or in another partition to be able to run ActiveSync, which worked, unlike WMDC
    • Abandoning Windows Mobile altogether

sigh... It's sad that Windows Mobile is going down the drain...

Hopefully the new version of WMDC will solve the problems.

Never thought that I'll miss ActiveSync...

Mine just started to sync again this evening. No changes made at all. Ghost in the machine.

    Really?

What I really don't like about Windows is inconsistency. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it just doesn't. sigh (again).

I was using Palm PDAs for long enough that I had a few "extras", older models, that I could test with. I've only had the one PPC PDA, so I don't have that capability. I would have liked to have had that test to have another bit of information before it seemingly randomly changed. I'm thinking that it almost had to have been something on the PDA, especially since I reinstalled Vista.
