I'm trying to install a 5400rpm drive I got a great deal on, replacing the 4200rpm drive thats standard in the 2012WLMi. Acer tech support tells me the recovery disks should work without a problem, however they don't. The recovery process goes through its routine as normal but on its first reboot I get a HAL.DLL missing error.

Anyone here have any experience using the recovery cds to setup a new hdd?

Offhand I would say the recovery disk is defective and that file cannot be read.

If you can boot to a floppy, then get the hal.dll from here and copy it over to the notebook and see if that fixes things.

Holy crap, Jack! Thanks for the quick reply!

I never thought the recovery cds could be faulty, I'll suggest this to Acer support and perhaps I can get new ones shipped to me.

    Tonight I'll try again.
