can anyone comment on a really annoying problem I've encountered

my acer laptop has an hdmi cable connected to the samsung lcd tv. Problem..no surround sound..i can only get sound in the tv speakers. Do i really need to go out and buy a receiver to rectify this problem.

I've heard some people say you can and some say you can't

    thx

This could be a driver issue. Do you have the latest drivers that support surround sound? Without them you'll just get a stereo output. Also check your drivers and see if you can change the sound output from '2 Stereo Laptop speakers' to 'External Surround Sound Device' or equivalent.

i have to change the setting on my acer 6920 when connected to HDMI tv.

    looks something like this:

then just press ''set default device''
and just change it back when using the laptop speakers
    it supports 5.1 surround

OK, let's do some trouble-shooting. How are your surround sound speakers connected to the TV? What format of audio are you trying to transmit (Dolby, DTS, etc.)?

You may not need an HDMI A/V receiver, but if your surround sound system has a main console with an optical cable input, and if your laptop has "S/PDIF" capabilities, you will be able to use that to connect your notebook to the speakers. You'd need a TOSLINK-to-miniTOSLINK adapter that transforms the end of the optical cable into something that looks like a headphone plug; plug that into where the headphone jack is, and away you go!
