I have an old acer aspire 5050-3785 With a turion processor @2.2ghz with 1.5GB DDR2 SDRAM, a ATI radeon Mobility x1100 GPU (integrated) and an 80GB Hard Drive.
I would like to know if i could upgrade the processor to and AMD athlon X2 or something better than the 1 core turion that i have. I know that the ram is simply Plug and Play because I replaced one of the original 512MB RAM chips with a 1.0GB ram Chip. But I am wondering if i could change out the CPU so that when i fix it completely (the charging dongle burnt out) I could buy a CPU to replace it because the Processor just ran way too hot.
Thanks for any help i may receive from any of you!!!

dual core turions will work, up to TL-56 I would say just to keep temps down. TL-60's will work but do put out quite a bit of heat.
    max memory is 4GB

I also have an acer 5050 and upgraded the memory to 4 gig-- now want to upgrade the hard drive, currently has an 80 gig partioned to 40/40, anyone know what the largest harddrive this machine will support? Also, can I copy the entire hard drive to an external one and then copy back to the upgraded one?

im not sure what the max is for the hard drive but i upgraded my 5050 to the 250 gb harddrive with no partition and windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I installed the turion tl-60 processor 2.0 gig dual core but it does present problems as it boots and shuts down several times and usually comes up every 3rd or 4th attempt. I noticed that when the bootup shuts down just before it does the cpu fan spins at a high rpm but on the attempt when the boot goes smoothly the cpu fan stays at fairly low rpm. Is this a bios update problem like maybe the bios is trying to keep the cpu safe so it shuts it down when it raises past what the bios has as a preset temp that it considers safe for the old single core processor?

Any hard drive with the correct connector (either SATA or IDE) should work, it should be a 2.5" form factor drive.
