Hi guys,
The Aspire 5739G I purchased from Newegg in July has been randomly crashing on me. Windows completely freezes without BSOD, I can't move my mouse, the sound skips repeatedly, and the keyboard is unresponsive (num lock won't turn on) which forces me to manually shut down with the power button. The screen flashes a bit before the crash happens.
I first experienced these problems after I installed Windows 7, but I reset to factory defaults w/Vista and the problem still remains. After two fresh installs of Win7 and one of Vista I am stumped. I also ran the Western Digital HDD, memory diagnostic tool, and mem86 and they all didn't find any problems with my hardware.
The crashes have occurred in Excel, playing flash movies, games, but mostly in playing videos. However the crash is completely random. I have tried both media player classic and VLC with different movies and windows has crashed with both. Not to mention that the same video that crashed my computer, I can play again with no problems or it will crash again at a different spot so it's not a corrupt file. Also I've tried both official and unofficial video card drivers and that didn't work. Event Viewer also doesn't tell me crap.
My laptop is still under warranty but I'm afraid Acer won't take it back or do anything if the problem isn't obvious. I once sent this laptop in for a noisy fan (loud buzzing noises) but they sent it back without repair since they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Even though the fan is noisy, speedfan says that temperature is kept cool and I'm also using a laptop cooler.
Anyone have any idea what's messing my laptop up? If someone could help me that would be great.
-
Bump
It also seems to me that flash movies crash when I have enable hardware acceleration enabled so maybe something's wrong with my gpu? -
I have the exact same laptop with the exact same problem. I purchased it from acerdirect in july.
It used to crash on vista, and i was put off from sending it back to acer because i'd heard it was probably vista that was the problem, not the laptop. i loaded windows 7 3days ago and its still crashing.
theres very little to indicate why its doing it. i'v ran high spec games such as far cry 2 for hours at a go, without it doing anything. other times, i open up a film, and it just crashes b4 my eyes.
around 60% of the time, it SEEMS to crash because of a media problem, i.e. when im running itunes, or a movie (it will only ever crash at the very beginning of a movie/when i jump through the film, never really half way through), or sumtimes when the acer screensaver pops up, it will crash at an unspecified point during that.
Yet, i can leave my laptop on all night to dl stuff, and if i turn the screen off (Fn + F6) it will always b there in the morning totally fine. sometimes the computer will crash, but the audio (either a film or song) will continue playing, sometimes longer than 30 seconds.
i'm reluctant to send it back to acer because i'v heard they'll probably just send it back, and if they do find a fault they will take a loong time to fix it, and i really need my laptop for my course.
ANY suggestions (even if it means sending it back) would be very very grateful.
Thanks
Mak -
I would suggest doing a clean reinstall and use updated drivers.
-
I'd agree with weinter - avoid using the Windows 7 upgrade disc you received from Acer, and download a retail Windows 7 ISO from your preferred reputable torrent site. Burn it, boot from it, and install away.
-
Hmm I've tried fresh installing Win7 both from the acer disk and the downloadable ISO from the student discount and both crashed on me. I've also kept my drivers updated.
And I've been getting similar things as Mak has in that I can browse and do normal tasks fine. Even most PC games run without a problem but videos can keep crashing randomly.
I guess I can try a torrented copy and see how that goes. -
thanks for the suggestions guys. Im afraid this isn't the first fresh install this has happened with for me. i did use the W7 acer upgrade disk tho, is the acer upgrade disk known to cause problems? since this has happened with vista and 7, would this not b a hardware problem?
i havn't tried a torrented version of W7 so alphax please let me know how it goes
also, does your freeze on start up as well? for example, it will display the windows load up screen, go blank, and hang there? -
It only happened once or twice but i would get to the starting windows screen and it would play the startup noise but it never took me to the login page. At its worst it sometimes freezes right after windows boots up and I click to open firefox or open and close my dvd drive but that hasn't happened lately.
Also I emailed acer and they're telling me to run a Gateway HDD diagnostic.
I torrented win7 but I won't be able to test it out till next weekend (have papers due).
And just wondering Mak, does your laptop's fan also make really loud buzzing noises to the point where you can feel the laptop vibrating? It's probably irrelevant but still an annoyance. -
Sounds like your fan's grinding, alphax_0. That happens when the blades run against the side of the fan casing. Tell Acer, they might be able to replace the fan.
-
Thanks for the tip TehSuigi. Thing is the buzzing isn't constantly running. It comes on for a while then goes away regardless of the program I am running. It can even come and go during the course of a single video so when I sent it to Acer a month back they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it and sent it back.
Also I tried my torrented Win7 image and nothing's changed
Guess something in my hardware's messed up -
Should we contact acer and send them back?
my fan doesn't make the buzzing noise -
I am having exaclty the same problem with the same laptop, except mine started before my windows 7 upgrade so i doubt very much it's anything to do with windows. The only thing i can think of that's causing it is the nvidia card overheating, which could be very possible especially if there is a fault with the fans (mine makes a loud buzzing sound now and again). I've searched everywhere on the net and can't find a solution and i realy can't afford to send my laptop in even with the warranty i have because i'm at uni and need it for my work! If anybody comes up with anything that means i don't need to send it in for repairs please please please let me know, thanks
.

Wow another one? I didn't notice the crash during Vista but I only used my laptop for a couple of weeks before I switched to the Win7 RTM. Though when I went back to Vista the crashes were still there
I contacted Acer and they told me to run an HDD diagnostic here: http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=21280&dscr=GWSCAN 5.12&uid=165130279
Tried running the "extended scan" and it reported the message "errors unrecoverable please contact support" during the full media scan. Maybe it is the HDD after all. I'm gonna run it again later tonight and see if I get the same result. If you guys could run it too and tell me if you get the same errors that would be great. -
Hello everyone!
I bought Acer Aspire 5739G a few days ago. Installed W7. Before installing all the latest drivers from Microsoft, Laptop crashed (blue screen) a few times. After installing the latest drives from Microsoft the blue sreen stopped (for now anyways), but I have another problem now (actualy it started from the beginning, even before the latest drivers were installed):
If I switch off my laptop completely and try to switch it on, computer stops to load the system right after the Windows LOGO (loading) and before the LOG ON screen. In a beginning Start up Repair solved the problem and after restart the Windows will boot. But it does not help anymore. Now I have to keep my laptop always ON otherwise I might never switch it back on
Any suggestions of why this is happening? And what could be the solutions?
Would appriciate any comments. -
I havn't got Nero or the other bruner software so i don't think i can do this scan
. I emailed Acer hopefully they will give me a different response, i'll post in here what they say. Also it's worth checking, but if you go to your device manager, click view and show hidden devices, scroll down, is your "int15" device not working? it says "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)" and i can't find any drivers for it.. hmmm
-
asdfox, you should probably query acer about this, send an email, hopefully if they get enough complaints they will actually get off there arses and do something helpful about the problems the 5739G's seem to be having
-
seamus3 - i will do that for sure
anyone else has any ideas of what to do in my case?
by the way, i had problem with my sound as well, but i just turned off the Internal subwoofer in computer sound settings, and it works perfectly. -
seamus - i went on device manager and cudn't see device int15. where wud it b located? wud it have been flagged up with a yellow question mark? there was none.
alphax - how do i use gwscan? do i have to burn it to disk and boot from there? -
You need to click on "view" at the top then "show hidden devices" then it should show up, it has an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle.
-
asdfox, have you tried using your original factory setting recovery discs yet? I think that's probably one of the first things support would say to do.
Well ran GWSCAN again and got the same result of unfixable errors during the full media scan. I told Acer and they want me to send it back which I can't until I get off from school for the holidays -_-.
The full message was "UNABLE TO CORRECT THE ERRORS FOUND - PLEASE CONTACT TECHNICAL SUPPORT"
RESULTS - "SECTOR RELOCATION ERROR"
ERROR/STATUS CODE = 0226
To run gwscan you need to burn it to a cd and then go to the bios and change the boot order so that the disc drive has priority. And seamus you don't need Nero to burn it just download imgburn to get the iso to burn to the disc and it should run fine.
Also I can't seem to find the Int15 thing you were talking about either. I checked view hidden devices but I don't see any caution triangle icons. Is there a category where the device is? -
Aha i wouldn't worry about that, I just used erecovery to put my laptop back to the orginal settings, and it's gone now so it must have been part of a programme i had installed. Anyway problem still isn't fixed even though it's at the original settings. I think i'll have to send it in. Did you ring or email them? becuase they havn't replied to my email yet and it says they should have replied within 24 hours :S
-
I am almost 100% it must be an actual hardware issue if the original settings and drivers still can't make it work.
-
Also that error you recieved means the driver needs to be replaced. i just searched it :S oh dear.
-
I've been corresponding through email. They're usually pretty prompt from what I've seen. And the buzzing from my laptop has changed from on-and-off-buzzing to grinding constantly. Sent them a strongly worded letter and am waiting for verification so I can send this broken thing in.
And I meant that recovery disk for asdfox since he doesn't quite have the same thing going on with our laptops and might have had an error during the Win7 install or something. But yeah it's definitely the hardware for our laptops.
Hopefully we'll all get these things fixed and acer isn't stingy on the repair evaluations -
Well i ran the HDD diagnostic, go the same result as you alphax, looks like i'm gonna be sending it in! I hope they can fix this and it isn't a problem with the laptop design
i like this laptop haha. And i got an email
they told me to restore the original settings which i 'd already though of
i replied explaining the HDD thing aswell so they can get straight to the point of telling me to send it in. Also if your not sending urs in right away because of school, when i get mine back or i find anything else out to do with the problem i'll keep you updated just so your not in the dark.
-
My laptop was manufactured on 05.11.2009, so maybe that is why I am not having the same problems as you do guys (that is if your notebooks are earlier versions than mine).
I sent an e-mail to Acer about my problem, so will wait what will they reply.
Alphax 0 - I do not have a recovery CDIn my package there was only a DVD with drivers.
-
asdfox - turn on your laptop when the Acer logo comes up press Alt+F10 and it should take you to eRecovery, you dont need a disk.
-
Yeah I'd appreciate it if you'd keep me posted seamus. I'd hate to have to pay shipping to Texas again
asdfox, my laptop was manufactured 7/20/2009 if that tells you anything. -
I have the same crashing issue with my 5739g. I got mine at the beginning of august through newegg and it started crashing a few weeks later. I've tried multiple OS's (vista, 7, ubuntu) and have had the same crashing issue with them all. The crashes are usually random however I can get the system to crash by opening and closing the cd tray multiple time or plugging in and out usb devices (usually my ipod).
I have recently updated the BIOS but the issue is still occurring. I have not contacted acer because I've read the horror stories about how bad the support is and want to try everything I can before I contact them.
Hopefully we can all get this issue fixed. -
If I will do this eRecovery, I will loose all my settings right? What about my documents?
-
Theres an option to keep all your documents, it will move them to a backup folder "c:\backup" something like that. But all your settings will be lost.
-
Kwill17, we have tried everything, i have spent the best parts of the last week trying to fix it. We have determined that the problem lies with the laptops hardware and the only way you can fix it is by replacing the laptops drive. Read back through all these posts and you can see everything we have tried - and i suggest you email acer and tell them YOU have tried this stuff aswell, that way you dont have to because they will ask you too and it will save you time. Take advantage of your warrant and get them to fix the mistake they made during production. They are quite helpful, email them here: [email protected] explaining your problem and they will email you back with what you need to tell them. Remember to say you have tried what we tried so they can tell you to send them the laptop.
-
Did anyone had any problems with USB ports working after you switch from sockets to battery and back? Mines sometimes stop working after I do that, and after restart they work again. (but I still have problems with restarting, it does not want to do it).
-
seamus, do you have the European model with the 240M? I have the American one with the 130M. Would that make any difference in the way our laptops were manufactured?
asdfox, I haven't had problems losing my USB devices. It crashed once when I closed the cd tray but I haven't been able to recreate it so it might've been a coincidence
kwill try the gwscan diagnostic and run the extended test and see if you got the same error as we did -
alphax,
I ran the scan with the same error: "errors unrecoverable please contact support"
Also mine is the American one with the 130m.
I'm planning on sending an email to support tomorrow and phoning by tuesday. Hope to get this resolved because besides this issue I really like the laptop. -
Alphax i have 130m, Kwill17 i like this laptop too but it does seem too much trouble than it's worth, i really hope if they fix it or replace it we won't get this problem again otherwise we will be back to the start again.. If so i'll try and get my money back and get a laptop that has been properly put together and tested lol
-
I have had every problem that has been listed above for the 5739G (130GT)
Bought system July 24th, 2009. Received it July 27th, 2009. When I first used it I went through the typical steps updating the windows updates, looking for updated drivers, installing programs I use, removing bloatware and so on all was peachy.
Then I began getting blue screens within the next couple of days, it occurred anytime I removed a device from the USB, or closed the screen while the unit was on. So finally windows solutions asked me to look for updated graphics drivers (I'm dead serious Windows actually did something useful) so I upgraded to Nvidia GT 130M 7.15.11.7952 (released 7/28/2009). Blue screens stopped and all was great.
Withing a week or two after it working properly I began getting the flickering screen and the lockups. My screen would flash white or tear in half for a split second then the screen would be frozen. CPU light 9 times out of 10 stops flashing, and I loose all input. I hear a ticking noise on the speakers or headphones. So then I looked at my windows 7 upgrade status, "Fulfillment in Progress" great should be here soon, I'll just install 7 and be done with this.
No, windows 7 still hasn't arrived, it has been Fulfillment in Progress for 3 weeks now. I registered for my copy back in August (after a SN fiasco with Acer).
So fed up I contacted tech support this week, I'm off classes so I have a week I can figure this out. No dice, they want me to Acer eRecovery (i uninstalled it since i made the 3 back up discs). So I decided to go to google and I found this thread.
So I have come to the conclusion that Acer botched something up with the units made in July and is reluctant to replace/repair the units.
I also have the issue where the windows load screen finishes then the screen stays black and never loads the log in screen. So far I am just disappointed with Acer tech, and am not looking forward to calling them to see if I can get a more reasonable resolution to this problem. -
Installing Windows 7 did not change the situation at all for my computer. It also persisted after I used the recovery discs to switch back to Vista. If you haven't already try the GWSCAN and see if you get the sector relocation error in your hard drive. You might be able to speed up the support process if you tell them that.
Anyone else with a 5739G that has problems? Maybe we can bumrush Acer's inbox with complaints to make them see there's something seriously wrong with this model.
Or to switch the question around, anyone with a 5739G have no problems so far? -
alphax,
I think your idea about bumrushing Acer's inbox is a great idea. We should all schedule a day this week and send in our formal complaints and issues. If we get no response in 24 hours then we switch to calling. Hopefully Acer realizing this is a widespread issue will help us get our laptops fixed (or better yet a refund, which probably wont happen) -
Did you all Upgrade your Ram? if so what spec did you use? 555 ? 666? low or High density? Do you have usb mice attached? Any other common usb Prepherials, pcmcia?
Did you try the sticky for removing Recovery partition? -
how about tomorrow (thursday)? im going to email them then
-
I also suspected USB prepherials and unplugged all devices and it still crashed.
Does the recovery partition cause problems? I would think that factory defaults would give a stable machine but resetting did not help my case.
I'll send Acer an email Thursday and see what they say. I don't think we need to coordinate that much considering there's only a few people here, but the more letters we can send, the better the chances Acer might look at our laptops more seriously -
Lame, fare well brave early adapters...
-
I just got this computer today with Windows 7 already installed. I get irregular black screen crashing, and at first was getting blue screens as well. I have taken out the battery and it works just fine.. of course, this defeats the purpose of having a laptop.
Any ideas? -
Can I re-store even if i removed the eRecovery from the control panel? If so I have to try that before I can get to the next Acer step. I'm thinking I'll have to call them soon.
Keep us up to date on any of your successes with Acer Tech guys!
As for upgrading this system's RAM, no I have not. This computer is completely as is from the box. -

How about updating the BIOS?
Acer original BIOS are very crappy hence there is always a need for updates. -
1. Power off unit
2. Unplug ac cord
3. Remove battery
4. Hold power down for 30 seconds
5. plug battery in
6. plug ac cord in
7. start up computer
Never got past the windows load bar.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
