I tried to run without the battery, what I got was a POST error beep code. Which I do not have a list of the code beeps to decipher what it means. The laptop never past POST.

Ok i just got my laptop back today... I sent it to be repiared. The people at the repair centre sent it back telling me they have done nothing to it as i didn't supply my password.. Which i did over the phone because they rang me up and asked for it!!! I am getting so pissed with this now. It's close to christmas so if they come to collect it again i doubt i'll get it back for the start of my next term at uni. This is ridiculous.

Got mine back today. All they did was reload the hard drive and updated the bios. Sure enough I ran GWSCAN and it still produced the sector relocation error. Nothing's changed, the computer will flash the screen and windows will lock up. Happened 4 times today. The guy at support even said that he determined the parts needed to be replaced.

    Ugh.

Also tried without the battery. No change to the freezing.

Have you tried running the low level format tool from the disk manufacturer to add the bad sectors to the g-list?
You shouldn't do this in Windows or use OEM Tool.

I haven't. Could you elaborate on how you do this and where to find the tool? Is there any particular software I should use and how safe is it?

If your harddisk is Western Digital go to western digital site and download this
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=703&lang=en Burn the iso image to CD and boot from the CD to run the low level format tool.
If the bad sectors are fixable the tool will fix it if not
it will redirect the bad sectors to the g-list so Windows(any OS) will not even know the existence of the bad sectors.

For every other MAJOR brand similar tools exist (Hitachi, Seagate) just browse their sites for downloads, if you are on Fujitsu or Toshiba drive you may be out of luck.

Thanks weinter, I'm going to try and see if Acer will replace my hard drive one more time. If that fails I'll definitely give it a try. Hopefully Hitachi has a program too.

Alphax, you're under wrranty - they supplied faulty goods mate, they HAVE to either fix it, replace it or give you your money back. Thats why there sodding around sending it back to you without fixing it, there trying to make you give up. If they ever refuse to fix it replace it or give you your money back they will be breaking the warranty contract and you can take it to court (i now thats sounds a bit much but thats why they will eventually do the right thing, they don't wanna be taken to court and don't want bad revues)

Hi guys. The same here with the laptop... I 've tried everything I can think of except installing win7 and the hdd test that you mentioned, which I am about to perform. I' don't have the time to send it to Acer because I have upcoming exams and I need to study but I will surely let them know through an email. Mine also has some trouble connecting to wireless networks. It doesn't connect unless the signal is full. How about yours?

    Hey guys,
I just read the 7 pages of this thread, and I am having the same problem :( .

My Acer 5739G with NVIDIA 130M crashes every now and then. But for a minimum of 2 times per day. The crashes are very irregularily..Sometimes it happens when I just open up the Windows Messenger window. I bought it back in august when I started university.

I am not getting blue screens or anything special. It is just the keys and the touchpad that freezes. Just as a couple of people in this thread also mentioned.

I have found out that it crashes every single time I try to burn a DVD using "DVD Shrink" at the Analysing-process!

I have upgraded to Win7 64-bit via a free student license but I was also having problems with the pre-installed vista (which I tried for a week before i changed to Win7).

I have now tried GWSCAN and memtest86+ to check harddisc and ram but no errors were found on my system.

Hey séamus, sad to hear about your hdd decreasement.

I just figured out that if you disable (not uninstall) your nvidia driver in Device Manager, my computer does not crash. Maybe this will work for you aswell for now? Not that I recommend you to accept this low resolution but just use it to see if a crash is possible.

I have used this set up with lowest standard resolution for a few days without a single crash! And today I have installed the newest nvidia driver (8.17.11.9562 as of 11/20/2009) to see if it will fit.

I must conclude for now that it has to be a graphic problem.

But the HDD diagnostic showed the drive was faulty and acer replaced it so it must have been.. it might be a joint problem with the graphix aswell... :( i emailed them asking for my money back or a replacement.

I have the same problem. I got the first 5739G with graphic card GT240 in the beginning of Nov. It BSOD with video hardware error and randomly freeze like yours. I called acer they only tell me to restore the system. But I done twice and it didn't help. Then I called the seller amazon and ask for replacement. Their service is very good. Send me a new one and collect my old one back.
I thought the new one may different........But I was wrong......The only difference is the BSOD is remarkably much less than the previous one, as well as the freeze times....
In my system there is intel matrix storage installed. so install it may not help.
But I reinstall it again and see what will be going on....
    sorry for my poor English.

If you mean the system reinstall , I try it at previous one by using erecovery with format C drive and reinstall .same problem.
For the matrix storage, I uninstall it in safe mode. and reinstall it in nomal mode as it can't install in safe mode.

To be honest I dont think it is because of Windows 7. I have 25 classmates with the same student download version of Windows 7 Professional and it is only me experiencing these random crashes.

But as a side note my Acer has run smooth WITHOUT CRASH for 2 days now. I deleted the nvidia driver from Device Manager and rebooted to have a driver automatically detected. Then I went to nvidias driver page and downloaded the newest driver as I wrote in my last reply. I have even been able to burn a DVD on my computer which I could not do before because it would cause a sudden crash.

PS i did not achieve any errors from the memtest nor the gwscan as some of you did, so mine could be a graphic error only

I got my laptop back from Acer with the following done:

    Installed new HDD 250gig

    Updated Bios

    Installed OS

    Computer did the following:

Today I received my laptop back from your repair depot. I powered the
unit up and the screen froze at the vista load bar. I could hear the
computer load to the desktop so I hit the power button twice and the
computer shut down properly. I waited 30 seconds and the powered the
unit back on. The unit reached the desktop, the screen flickered then
the computer froze 2 seconds later the computer then rebooted
automatically. It gave three choices start up windows normally, safe
mode, and safe mode with network. I chose start normally the computer
loaded the vista loading bar and is now stuck at a black screen.

They offered to do more repairs, great two more weeks with out it. They said there is no replacement options for this laptop. YAY so I just have to keep mailing it back to them until it becomes a whole new laptop.

Note to self, or anyone thinking about getting an Acer product: DO NOT.

I don't think the clean install would help, as you can check the thread about windows 7 freeze in my last reply. Some of them did clean install, but that won't help. Eventhough reformat C drive, deleting all the hidden drives, still the same.Reinstall the intel matrix storage seems useless to me.

At the moment,I uninstall the Acer ipower management, and now it works smoothly for 2days. Fingure crossed.

The only thing they told you is restore the system or send it back. I tried before. They are helpless. And not just our laptop got this problem. :( :(
when you google windows 7 freeze, you will see not a few results reporting this problem. Acer just one of them.See this :

Then how do you explain my situation? I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. It must be a hardware issue and most probably it's the graphics card... Anyone knows how to check the GPU and RAm of the graphics card?

You can use GPU-Z for checking your graphic card details and this software is free. Here is the website for downloading:

I installed Win7 x64. Without VGA driver there is not any freeze.
But after VGA driver installation my laptop (Acer 5739g) starts to freeze irregulary.
There are some more people with Geforce GT130m graphic adapter experiencing same problem.
    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=151032
I suppose it is video driver issue.

This forum link definitely describs the exact same problrem as I am experiencing and for a lot of the other users connected to this thread. If Acer Support advices me to send my 5739G in for a repair, I am going to attach my collection of forum links. I think we seriously need to tell Acer Support in multiple countries to make sure that the company is aware of the problem and have a chance to show that they care about their customers!

    Temporary solution?:

    Disabling PowerMizer
1.Open up Regedit and go to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\********\0000\
The *'s will be random numbers. There will be a few of them, pick the one with the most stuff in it.
2.Create the 4 Powermizer keys (these will all be DWORD):
    PerfLevelSrc
    PowerMizerEnable
    PowermizerLevel
    PowermizerLevelAC
3.Change the values (double click on them) to:
PerfLevelSrc 3322 (I changed to 2222 to completely disable PowerMizer)
    PowerMizerEnable 0
    PowermizerLevel 1
    PowermizerLevelAC 1
4.Reboot and Powermizer will be disabled!

Right, so I've done uninstalled acer power management AND disabled powermizer, and so far so good, HOWEVER, it's only been one day, and I just checked the nvidia thread on this to find that the problems come back when you run on battery for the powermizer fix. I'm gonna check out running on battery now and see what happens!

It's been a week since I disabled powermizer and that seems to have done the trick. Still a bit worried about that guy at the nVidia forums saying it still happens when you're on battery though.
