Hello All,
I have a big issue with my Acer Aspire 5739G laptop that I recently purchased through Ebay. Actually, I bought it from Newegg dba Fred's Fresh Deals. (Newegg sells their returned items and cosmetically damaged goods under this name on Ebay). The laptop was advertised as a possible hard drive issue (it couldn't load windows and the error code looked like a boot sector virus, so I purchased it thinking a simple reformat will fix it).

Anyways...
After I did a fresh reformat of the hard drive and a fresh install of Windows 7, the laptop freezes/locks up after 10-30mins on the desktop. I cannot move the mouse or anything, so I have to do a hard reboot. I don't understand how it is happening.
I updated the mobo's Phoenix driver to the latest one, and tried older VGA Nvidia drivers because I thought it might be a video card driver issue; It is still locking up. I went as far as to purchase a brand new laptop hard drive and the problem still arises. There is no BSOD. As noted earlier, the computer just simply freezes. I cleared CMOS....240M GT VGA is running factory settings....I tried leaving only 1 ram stick in the laptop. I never ran through a problem like this before.
I ran it on Safe Mode and the computer seems to be working fine as long as I do simple tasks or remain idle. I did the SFC /SCANNOW in safe mode and it locks up. I attached my event view file to this email. (I tried to install RivaTuner to underclock factory settings, but the program could not load). Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I forgot to set the date and time, so you see that the year is off! >.<
My Event File is attached to this email for your review.
I'm getting these errors before the crash:

I suppose you cant give it back to them and swap it for an easier fix ? Dont understant why NewEgg wouldnt return warranty failures ot Acer but hey.
Download the iso of memtest86+ and burn the boot disk. Run it with both sticks in.
Download and install SIW to monitor motherboard voltages and temperature trends
Download and run prime95 to stress the processor
Download and run 3Dmark06 to stress the graphics and watch volts and temperatures in SIW every so often as these tests run
A defective processor or chipset is also possible but rule out the easy stuff first. A failed motherboard is not goingto be an economic repair -
Hey there,
Memtest passed with both RAM hooked up.
3DMark03 and 3DMark06 freezes at the first test. Any conclusions? (I have the latest DirectX installed)
Prime95 Stress Test freezes after a few minutes as well...
Here is another log of the events before freezing..

I cannot return this laptop because they also advertised No Returns b/c it is a second hand item. >.< -
Temperatures etc before the freeze ?
-
Hey BruBoo,
Mid to High 70's Celsius during stress tests. I cannot find the voltage settings in SIW. >.<
Anyways, I uninstalled Win7 and tried Vista..and I had the same frequent crashes. Then, I reformatted the hard drive and installed Windows XP a few days ago and 3DMark successfully completed (no artifacts either) and I was able to run Prime95 for a few hours of the blended stress test. I still get crashes, but it is very random. (like after a few hours). It is a lot better than crashing after a few minutes in Win7 or Vista.
WD Diagnostic test and Memtest still passes, so I am still puzzle to what is making my computer lock up. Driver maybe? -
Hmm . . Possibly a driver issue . . Assumed you had all the up to date ones though.
Sounds like the right time to put it back on ebay. . . -
Yeah, it still crashes on the newest nvidia driver. Device Manager doesn't show any hardware conflicts that are installed. The only type of event errors I get now are DCOM. Even that, I tried to fix, but the DCOM errors still show up. My only guess is the video card or the video card driver b/c the laptop would lock up after 10-15mins in Vista/Win7, but I won't freeze in XP until after a few hours. Argh. Thanks for trying to help though.
