    hello folks,

    i recently bought a Acer Aspire 5670.
Day 1 - I attempted to make my recovery DVD's
Got the OS DVD done perfect. But the Software installation DVD just won't get created. The software starts extracting the image & then errors out.
I guess the image is corrupt. So i gave that up, its no big deal any way since i can download most of the apps from their website.

I then made a backup image of the system to a DVD using the eRecovery software. it worked all well untill then.

Then, since this came with windows xp Home edition, i thought i'd upgrade it to XP Professional.
So i now i had XP Pro on it & finally i upgraded my Data partition to NTFS since Fat32 cant hold files bigger than 4GB in size.

after having made the above changes i can no longer use the eRecovery software. It starts up fine, then says that it will need to reboot the machine & just boots back in to windows with an error stating "eRecovery Failed"

I attempted to boot into the Utility partition by pressing the "ALT+F10" at the POST. But thats no good.

So in nuttshell, eRecovery won't work coz it cant boot into the utility partition.

I am unsure which of the above changes caused it. I tried reformatting the data partition into Fat32, but it wont let me. Windows throws an error saying the partition is too big for FAT. i guess that acer got it to be FAT via some OEM tool.

does any one know how to fix the utility partition. i see it fine in disk management, it just won't boot any more.

i guess something has changed in the MBR code.
has anyone tested the eRecovery software to see if it works with NTFS partitions?

hope i can get some good help here.

    TIA....

eRecovery does not work in NTFS. That is what most Acer users have been saying.

As long as you didn't wipe the hidden partition, eRecovery should work. In order to access it, you have to change the boot order in the bios and boot from the recovery dvd you made. I have an 8204 and I reformatted the other 2 partitions and merged them into one NTFS. I later decided that I wanted to restore the comp back to factory. All i had to do was change the boot order in the bios and put the dvd drive first. Hope this helps.

That's good to know. I had read somewhere on NBR that eRecovery doesn't support NTFS. NTI backup NOw! 4 that comes with most ACER computer's should also do a restore. They have lots of options.

well, guys i am not trying to restore...hence booting from DVD is not what i need. I need to able to make new backups. the eRecovery management software works fine as it gets launched & everything. It just wont create a backup since to be able to do that, it needs to reboot the computer to the utility partition & thats what is not working...
    i hope i explained it rt :-(

thanks for the effort folks...i appreciate ur responses.

You mean creating your OWN Recovery CD/DVD after you have tweaked/installed YOUR choice of programs?
Well, this can be done. With Norton Ghost.
Basically you have to follow these steps:
    - first, make a bootable CD/DVD which will contain a basic mouse driver (DOS mode), a CD driver (also DOS mode) and, of course, Norton Ghost (also DOS mode and a version that DOES access NTFS partitions)
    - you then boot using this CD/DVD and create a backup of the partition which contains your current OS install (and other applications)
    - you them make another bootable CD/DVD as I have first mentioned above, but making sure to also put on it the backup files created by Norton Ghost
Voila: you now have your very own personalized Recovery CD/DVD
