I have some kind of BIG problem with my Acer Laptop. It's an Acer Aspire 1700 Series. The thing is that i was away for the weekend and the lappy was on my desk just like it ever was, but when i came back home and tried to switch it on, it didn't power up. I mean it did for 3 secs you can also hear the fan turning but it shuts down immediately after again. I tried with power supply plugged and unplugged and it's still the same. I finally reached to turn it on after 10 min (and after shaking it a bit cause i was like [ :(!] ) but i don't think thats a solution! I tried to turn it on this morning but it wouldnt again [ :(]
Does anyone have an idea ?????

    Any help appreciated !!!

Does it get past the Acer logo or reach the Windows XP logo at bootup? Try booting into the BIOS and stay there for a bit, does it work? If it doesn't get past the Acer Logo or enter the BIOS, it's a hardware problem and you'd need to send it in for repair. If it gets to the Windows Logo and then powers off, it could be the OS itself causing the problem. Try booting into Safe Mode (hit F8 before Windows XP Logo). If it works in Safe Mode, it's guaranteed to be a software problem, either OS or drivers.

Hi, I have 2 weeks old Aspire 2012, and problem seems to be the same: it will not start up. Well, it can happen occasionally, once from hundred cases, but most time it looks like dead stuff. I succseeded to purchase it overseas, and the warranty is under question. So, bad quality of Acer products? Had at least 4 used laptops before (not Acer) and never had any hardware problems.

To Biomanniax: what was the reason, if it's already fixed?

    hi

    I have a similar problem.

I had to open up my acer asppire 1300 because the power connector had to be resolded. I took it apart on a static mat, with a static wristband. needless to say every single component had to be taken out in order to fix it.

it can now be turned on using any of the buttons bove the keyboard (pwr, mail, web, p1, p2) and shuts down after around 4-5 seconds (it stays on for strictly the same amount of time, regardless of what I do).

I have a clue it might be due to a problem with the CPU. the fact is, I took the athlon out of its socket (I first thought there was a screw under it) and had some trouble putting it back in. My guess is, the temperature detection now ****s up and the BIOS thinks it is overheating and then shuts the power down.
this has NOT YET BEEN VERIFIED. I will try to use another CPU to see if this still occurs.

Until then, does anyone know where I can get info on how this temperature detection is performed, if some pins on the CPU are used for that purpose? thank you for any help or further ideas on the source of the problem.

well now. I had just put in a new hard drive the same day (that was tested to run fine), the old one was nuked and proved to have some part moving freely inside when you shook it lightly. [ :(!] grrrr

    have a nice day

It sounds like that time when my Acer aspire XC1310 broke a year ago. That was a result of short circut in the DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo. Got that part replaced and then it worked again.

Now it's dead again and its to old for warranty issue. This time it's completly dead. I get power from the AC adapter, at the battery connectors and around the power button. But no lids indicating that the battery are charging and nothing happens when I push the button.

Sorry for the late reply, but i came here today when i was googeling for solutions for my laptop :)

Take the battery out and hold down the power buttn for 5 secs to ensure that there is no charge at all. Then plug it in and switch it on without the battery in. It should start after this once it has been running a while plug the battery in while it is still on. This fault is caused by the battery draining too low (wierd fault with that model) which stops it starting at all. Let the battery charge up a bit before you switch it off again.
