Hello.
I'm writting this in the hopes that someone can help me without me having to spend money i simply don't have.
Basically, one of these nights i played some games, watches a few tv shows. The usual stuff i do. Turned the laptop just fine, everything was fine. Next day, the laptop doesn't boot. When i say it doesn't boot, i mean it really doesn't boot. I know the laptop isn't running. I've left it on for a while to see if the usual start up sounds appear and nothing, but i just knew it wasn't booting anyway. The screen is just black, no beeps or anything. I also tried removing one or two of the memory sticks, with no result.
After extensive searching, i found out about the whole pressing the power button for 1 minute or so to see if it's an electricity discharge thing. Tried it couple of times, nothing. After that I thought it might just be that the Bios has just gone bonkers and decided to try and blind flash it. I think blind flash it may be my one salvation, if it isnt an actual hardware problem. Problem is, ive tried burning a cd and a flash usb pen with the DOS files that come in the 1.16 bios version of the 8920g laptop, and doing the whole esc+fn thing, but it doesnt work. Also tried to rename the 116.rom file to bios.wph, but again, no results.
I wonder if there's a more correct name to the bios file to see if i can actually blind flash it?
Any help on this matter is much appreciated, as as i said, i don't have the money to just get a new laptop or computer, and if it was indeed something like the motherboard just dying, i cant afford to replace it as i think it may just be worth the price of a new computer anyway. So i want to make sure i at least try this blind flash thing before i decide its dead.
Thank you
-
BIOS can't go bad on its own. It's not an operating system- nothing is written there and nothing gets deleted (apart from the actual flashing process) so it's not an issue in your case.
Hard to say what's the root of the problem. Try with battery only and without battery. -
Thank you for the response.
I haven-t had a battery in my laptop for over a year now. So it can't be that.
I know it's kinda stupid that the BIOS would break itself, but i do wonder what a blind flash would do if i managed to do it. I have a feeling it's a hardware problem indeed, i just wanted to find a way to confirm it lol.
thanks again -
Blind flash would do no hard if it was done properly. And by properly I don't mean you doing it wrong- what worries me is that since your computer is not stable it can switch off at any moment and if it does during BIOS flash you will be in more trouble than you are now.

Well i've left it on for like half an hour to see if it did anything other than nothing, and it didn't turn itself off or anything of the sort. I don't think that would be an issue.
That being said, do you have any tips for me regarding the blind flash? I can't seem to be able to do it with either v116.rom or bios.wph as the file name. I could buy a floppy usb on ebay for about 10 pounds... but i wonder to myself if that's the reason i can't do it. I've read about people who did it with cd's and flash usb's, which is what i've tried myself but unsuccessfully.
Thanks again -
Yeah but you're still fixed on doing something that can't be the root of your problem. If you want to reset BIOS to default values find the CMOS battery and remove it for 10min or so- this will have the same effect.
It's more likely that the chipset that is usually glues to the mobo is no longer in firm in place or that it's a power issue (connector somewhere) -
oh. okay, that sounds like a good idea and much easier to do. if its a glue sort of thing, how can i tell? what am i looking for in the mobo? and can i fix it myself?
again, much appreciation for the help.
i've just given up. tried to find the cmos battery, but it's not in the main part which you can easily open. it must be hidden in the other part which basically means opening all of the laptop.
think ill just hand it in to a computer shop, see if they can determine if the mobo fried or its just a connector or power problem... sigh.
thanks again
